The biggest theme of the film is war. The brewing of all emotions and the unfolding of the story are based on the premise of war. The general story is based on the structure of succession and transformation, while "Franz" makes the film into a symmetrical structure by dividing the two locations in Germany and France. So almost all the elements in the film are symmetrical, the cold eyes of foreigners, the two protagonists looking for each other and the loss of themselves. The most obvious is the majestic chorus of the national anthem in two taverns, the first in the German tavern and the second in the French tavern. The peoples of the two countries sing about their motherland and warriors with the same heart, and are full of hatred for the other country.
