The success of blank space - film review of "I hear the sound of the waves"

The most successful thing about a movie is that it resonates, and how does it resonate? The answer is to leave blank .

Although on the whole, the film does not tell the story in a fractured manner, but in fact, when polishing each plot setting, it is not difficult for us to feel that there are large gaps left for each audience to fill.

The first is the character setting of the male and female protagonists. The male protagonist Toki Taku is a country boy, and the female protagonist Rikako Muto is a girl from Tokyo. When Rigako entered Takuya's high school, both her classmates and the people around her had "admiration" for this girl. A person's memory has the function of retaining the part that he values most, that is, selective memory. When the memory starts to play, which is what we call memory, the content in the memory must be deleted. And all the information that the audience learned from the movie was obtained from Takuya's memory, which made it impossible to know a lot of information at that time. But these are not important things. The important thing is that we can at least see from the memories of the hero that Rigazi was important to himself at that time. "Different" often generates a certain desire to explore, but at the same time, the audience does not seem to see Tuo's exploration of Rigazi too much in the film. Here we need to wake up: this film is unfolded from the perspective of the male protagonist . From Taku's memories, we can see that Taku is actually a boy with strong self-esteem: he likes Rigako, but it was not until the end that he was pointed out by his friend Matsuno Feng and then admitted. This alone is enough for him to forcibly adapt his own memories. What the audience sees seems to be a boy who has no interest in Rigazi, but these are all Taku's "eyes", and they are also the true portrayal of most boys of this age. If I don’t think about the pros and cons, it is difficult to determine the character of the male protagonist, and I also have uncertain factors starting from “recall”, but the genius of the film lies in this, it is precisely because of the appropriate “ignore” caused by Every boy who watched this film seemed to have a "mysterious" resonance, but in fact it completely attracted the psychology of real boys. On the other hand, the heroine Rigako is also based on Taku's memories, and is portrayed as a girl with a seemingly mysterious background, strange behavior, ever-changing and beautiful, but in fact a very ordinary character. Everyone has such a crush in their hearts. His/her uniqueness is often given by himself, and he/she is often despised by himself despite what he/she has been given: this person is nothing more than that! Ah, isn't that the case with love that is so pure that there is nothing at all? This blank is really beautiful.

The second is the conditional factor that the male and female protagonists like each other. It is divided into external environment and internal environment. The external environment is Kochi where the male protagonist lives. The claustrophobic environment of Kochi, like the high school days of most of us, is closed and uninteresting, but so what? People still live, work, and study step by step, just like boys and girls out of adolescence, even if there is no so-called vigorous love, they still secretly love a person step by step. This is the case with the external environment that the film wants to express, but when we watched the film, we found that the film did not describe the environment too much. We only knew from the mouths of schools and children that this was a “slight” environment, at least compared to Tokyo. This environmental factor leaves the audience with enough imagination to enrich the inconspicuous living environment they once lived in. The internal environment is seen from the reaction of the hero and heroine to the external environment. Tuo’s love for the hometown environment and Rigazi’s disgust for Kochi formed a sharp contrast. This strong contrast can actually be replicated in many phenomena around us, such as the conflicts between students who have just arrived in the county and children in the county, or The conflict between newcomers and veterans who have just entered the workplace, etc. In short, the hero and heroine themselves are in a constant environment centered on themselves, and the development of drama is to collide these two internal environments, resulting in contradictions. Between contradictory needs and differences, the film uses a popular method in which the external environment affects the internal environment, so that most audiences can resonate.

The last is a youth description based on the emotional clues of the hero and heroine. The selling point of youth films is love! But the focus of youth films is not all love! I personally thought that this was one of the things that I heard about Hearing the Waves. The friendship between Feng and Tuo is entirely based on the mutual appreciation of the same sex. For me, the principle of making friends is also where this person attracts me. If it is replaced by the opposite sex, it may also be called "like". When Feng said he liked Rigako, Taku immediately became jealous. This jealousy can be said to be jealous of Lijiazi or jealous of Feng. Jealous of Rikako is that she stole Feng's attention from her friends, and jealous of Feng is that Feng is always the first to produce maturity above his own age. In addition, Rijiazi's incompatibility, bullying by classmates, Takuya's indifference, Feng's fist, and even the summary at the class banquet are the reactions of various people in adolescence, precisely because each person has a different personality and will not hide it. It created the so-called youth. The undisguised tone touches very little, but the form and frame are prepared for the audience, and the audience is naturally easy to bring into the emotion and experience.

After the nonsense: After watching the movie, I thought for a long time. I'm really at a loss for a review that doesn't focus on praising the film's "truth" and "blandness." So after meditating and recollecting the feelings this movie brought to me, I suddenly understood the reasons mentioned above.
