Wang Ying is based on the novel of the same name by Chinese American female writer Amy Tan. Some of these stories and characters actually included their own background, but the novels and movies were criticized to a certain extent because they were too negative for Chinese traditional culture and Chinese men. There is even a danger that Americans can't read it, and Chinese people don't like to read it.
This may be the first big production of an all-Chinese class in Hollywood history (with a budget of tens of millions)? There are also many Chinese actresses with American backgrounds: Zhou Caiqin, Xi Meijuan, Wu Junmei, Lu Yan, Yu Feihong, Wen Mingna. In fact, such a lineup, such a topic (culture, women, family), and such a method (following the segmented recall style of the original work) are rare even in today's world film industry.
I heard that the film will be adapted into a stage play recently. Looking forward to seeing it.
There are too many stories in this film (book) (see appendix), it is necessary to make a summary note:
