The Joy Luck Club is a movie originate form a novel written by Amy tan, which mainly tells about four Chinese American immigrant families in San Francisco who start a club known as “the luck club” playing the Chinese game of mahjong for money while feasting on a variety of goods. In the process of this party, the four Chinese American women recalled their stories individually.
The four immigrant families both have a daughter, although they lived in a totally different living conditions with their mother, they experienced similar fate unconsciously. With different cultural background, the four families suffered many conflicts between Chinese and American culture. In the growth of their daughters, although the four Chinese mothers have different education views, they all met many problems in deal with the relationship between mother and daughter.
1. Family values conflicts
For Anmei Xu, she was an orphan raised by her grandparents and other relatives because her mother was abandoned by her family. Her mother was raped by a rich man Qin Wu after her husband was dead, so she has nowhere to go after abandoned but to do the concubine. However, when her grandma was in dead, her mother was still back to her family to take care of her grandma and even cut her meat to cure her mother. After her grandma dead, her mother was still choosing to leave her family and Anmei Xu chose to follow her mother. After she followed her mother came into her mother new husband home, she found that her mother was not happiness actually. The new home was not respecting her mother and her mother lost her “soul” already , what her mother has done was to create a better life for her.In order to let her daughter to find her value, she chose to suicide. From her story, although there exist some bad habits of Chinese cultures, but we can still know that filial piety is a bond to keep Chinese family ties and traditional Chinese women are pay much attention to family not herself.
Unfortunately, Rose, he daughter of Anmei Xu, grew in the backgrounds of America, well-educated, married a rich white wan who loved her very much. Everyone was begrudged her, but with the unequal development of them, her husband was more successful than before, but she gradually became the housewife and no work, what she is done is to help her husband. They start to occur many conflicts, in order to save her family, she starts to expend more efforts to begging her husband and gradually lose herself, and her husband also left her. In a second chance, her mother talk to her with her mother's experience, she finally realized that she is not only lose the wealthy but also lose her “soul”, so she starts to struggle and start to find what her really are. Finally, her husband came back to her family. In her daughter's story,we can see that although Rose has growth in America and effected by American culture, but the influence of her mother was most. She was deeply influenced by Chinese family values. In traditional Chinese family values, Chinese women are educated to see their husband as center of her family, everything need to follow their husband's wills. For Lindo Jong, who is a strong-willed woman, a trait that her daughter Waverly attributes to her having been in the year of the Horse. Because of that, Waverly always lived in the scary of her mother and never violated her mother's wills. So, she married a Chinese American man as her mother's will at start. But the fact approved that she made a wrong chose and she was not happiness, so she divorced up and find a new white American man. However, she still wants to acquires her mother's approval, so she takes her boyfriend into her family banquet. On the dining-table, her mother prepared a rich dinner for them and said she is not good at cooking hope everyone can forgive her. For Chinese, we all know that it was a euphemistic expression to show her modest. But the man doesn't know it, he just criticizes her mother's cooking directly.There is no doubt that it was a humiliating for her. Actually, everyone one of them was right, it was just a conflict between two different languages cultures. For Chinese, Chinese people are more modest in their daily communication, everyone one of us can conclude the real meaning according to the context. But American people are more directly and frankly, there is no need for them to conclude.
Actually, there are still have a lot of cultural conflict between them, such as the Dutch life between couple, which is unacceptable in Chinese culture. However, there are still exist some common things between cultures, and with the adaption of their mother, they changed their lifestyles and speaking the poor English. At the end of story, with the mutual understanding and including with their mother,
every daughter finds their own lifestyles under the two cultures. For them, they are the outcomes of Chinese and American cultures mix. In the growth, they are struggled in the conflict between Chinese and American cultures, they don't know how to look upon With the many things they have experienced, they gradually find their own cultural identity. No matter how advanced American culture they think it is, they shouldn't abandon their traditional cultures, because something is circulating in their blood.
In today's world, the process of globalization is increasing and intercultural communications are more frequent, cultural integration is inevitable. But at the same time, cultural hegemony phenomenon is still existing, one of the most representative is American cultures. We need to strengthen protection of our excellent traditional cultures and absorb the good foreign cultures. I always believed that culture is the most precious gift of human that god gives us, everyone should value it.
