"The Joy Luck Club" doesn't seem to be so Ang Lee

The roommate kept saying, I recommend you to watch a movie by Ang Lee, there is Yu Feihong in it, it is very beautiful. Perhaps this is the same as most people's quick impression - a movie that is more Ang Lee than Ang Lee.

But after I actually read it, I was straight up being deceived. The difference is so big that even if Ang Lee's name is actually used, I will be confused as to why Ang Lee suddenly changed his style?

This story showing the fate of mother and daughter, if the cross-cultural background between China and the United States is removed, it still seems to be true. Traveling across the oceans and mountains and rivers only gives a more tortuous and far-reaching trace of the connection of destiny, and the earth-shaking changes in the living environment cannot block the connection of this generation of people. Then this story can be used as a metaphor that Chinese people still inherit Chinese culture in some form in another land, rather than an inevitable reasoning.

Perhaps, because of factors such as topic selection and picture quality, the audience will inevitably think of a director who also loves to write stories about the differences between Chinese and Western cultures.

But Wang Ying and Ang Lee's external expressions are too different.

Ang Lee's film is just like its name lian - Lian.

Ang Lee is stingy about the points and lines, just like a college teacher's final exam focus, layers of encryption for fear of premature leakage of answers. And "The Joy Luck Club" is full of narrations that express one's mind directly, and the lingering atmosphere created by the long lines is far from Ang Lee's thin, crisp and brisk Chinese comedy style. When I first watched "Food and Drink", influenced by my existing movie viewing habits, I was obsessed with the simple documentary style of video. I was very uncomfortable with the plot of the horse and the slightly violent editing rhythm. It is even extremely thought that Ang Lee is just catering to the Western imagination of the East. Glad I was really fragrant after a few years.

The mothers' experiences in the old China in "The Joy Luck Club" seem to be difficult to convince the native Chinese audience. Compared with the plots such as kneeling down and lying and escaping marriage, and committing suicide in exchange for the daughter's material life, they are tortured by the difficulties of hard and soft. The direction of the story seems to be more in line with our imagination of the old society. The story in the film is therefore added with a layer of romantic and strange filters of Chinese-American roots.

And these are filters that are almost absent in Ang Lee's films. Even if he pulls away from himself from time to time and reflects on the "strange behavior" of the East from a Western perspective, he will still choose the most settled materials, and narrate the stories of the East with fireworks floating in the world.

Regarding the emotional epic of women, four groups of mother-daughter relationships in two time and space, the conflict of values between China and the West, and the generation gap between the two generations are all explained by Wang Ying.

There is empathy and distance. Chinese mothers and parent-child relationships from a Western perspective. Too many characters will inevitably lose details and emotional buffers, and the purified innermost words will become too sublimated. The structure of the four stories is too similar, and the narrative lacks variation. The actresses are very natural, and the sense of the times is rendered a little thin, like a kind of symbol or stage set. It's best to choose a group play, but it's unlikely that any part of the story will be left out.
