After watching the movie, I don’t know if I should sympathize with the heroine’s experience. The daughter who was born in a poor hawker family, her parents hoped to send her to work through her. The heroine also has her own thoughts on this matter. She may hope to get a better life through the young master Alec, but the reality is not satisfactory. The unfortunate pregnancy after seduction and the unfortunate death of the child during childbirth are another blow to the miserable life of the heroine. A few years later, she meets the priest's son, Claire. She thinks she's met her Adam, but when the marriage comes, Claire learns of her past misfortune and abandons her. The ups and downs of the heroine's life culminated in the death of Alec, whom she considered her enemy, to be hanged. After watching the movie, it is more of a lament for this era. There are many such poor families who are eager to use marriage to provide life security, but I think that feelings with purpose can rarely be answered.
