Tess

Such a graceful woman, as sensitive as a hairspring, as pure as snow, why did she have to paint rough patterns on her body, as if it was destined? Why is it that the brutish takes possession of the exquisite, and the evil defiles the pure? ...Tess faced Alek's evil, and faced the slander and rumors that circulated everywhere, unyielding and stubbornly surviving. The author highlights the pure image with the rough, vulgar image, Tess makes this image strange, unique, natural, holy and passionate, the fiery love of the character and the strong hatred meet.

Simply perfect. The details are meticulous, not a single superfluous shot, the Victorian country picture scroll. A tragedy is filmed meticulously and without losing its original flavor. The ending is probably the most veiled murder scene of all Polanski's films, and when Alex holds the meat-cutting knife upright in his hand, the audience has a foretaste of what's going to happen next. Moral issues aside, Alex's approach to life is actually quite charming.

Tess used beauty and innocence to complete the ferry between rural society and industrial society. She was dying, and the sun was rising behind her.

Tess quotes

  • Alec d'Urberville: [sees Tess trying to learn how to whistle] Nor art nor nature ever created a lovelier thing than you, cousin Tess. To see that pretty mouth pouting and puffing away, without producing a single note.

Tess: It's all a part of my work, sir.

Alec d'Urberville: Well, never mind. I'll teach you. I won't lay a finger on you. See. I'll stay exactly where I am. Now, you watch me. Don't scrape your lips too tight. Do it like this.

    [whistles]

Alec d'Urberville: Blow gently. Gently. Try. Try again. Again. There. You'll manage splendidly now that I've started you off.

  • Alec d'Urberville: What are you crying for?

Tess: I was only thinkin', I was born over there.

Alec d'Urberville: Well, we all have to be born somewhere.

Tess: Why, I wish I'd never been born. There or anywhere else.

Alec d'Urberville: You're absurdly melancholy, Tess. You can hold your own for beauty against any woman, queen or commoner. I tell you that as a practical man who wishes you well. If you're wise, you'll let the world get a clearer sight of that beauty, before it fades. Why not make the most of life?
