When there is nothing to say, there are coffee and cigarettes on the table

When sitting at a table with an unfamiliar person, their hearts are far apart, but they are confined to both ends of the table by everything in front of them, and time is frozen in silence from time to time. The contrast between psychological distance and physical distance makes us feel uncomfortable. Embarrassment means this distance.

We try to use words to break the embarrassment and fill up time. Even a trace of blankness is unbearable.

When there was nothing to say, Jim Jarmusch found coffee and cigarettes on the table that could block his mouth. When the aroma of coffee overflows, the smoke spreads, the smell fills the white space of time, penetrates into our hearts, and wraps our emotions.

Eleven fragments, eleven scenes, black and white images, filtered out of color, let us focus on the sound, smell and expression at the moment.

1: Strange to Meet You

I said Nice to meet you in my mouth, but I was saying Strange to Meet You in my heart, it's weird, weird, so weird!

I stubbornly call you Steve, but you are Steven after all.

2: Twins

Is one evil and one good in twins? Who believes?

3: Somewhere in California

Anyway, I have quit, so why not take another one?

4: Those Things'll Kill Ya

Old friend, stop smoking!

5: Renée

Clumsy strike up a conversation, see more!

6: No Problem

What is the reason for meeting old friends? Just because I missed it.

–I understand.

–No. You don't understand.

You say you understand, I say you don't understand. There is more than one don't difference between you and me!

7: Cousins

As close as cousins, there is no intersection. Life is very different, it is useless to say more, and each is well.

8: Jack Shows Meg His Tesla Coil

Do you think I don’t understand? I just don't say.

9: Cousins?

There is no coffee, and tea is mixed.

10: Delirium

I am mentally confused, see part 1, dreams and coffee popsicles.

11: Champagne

Quandang Coffee is Champagne, after all, this is not the 1920s, nor the late 70s.

There is a problem with the subtitles. Grandma drops.

Jarmusch's minimalist film style: 1. Reduced characters, the camera always closely follows his main characters. 2. Simplify the scene. 3. Dissolving the narrative strategy of succession and transformation, one can clearly feel the strong atmosphere of "existentialism".

Coffee and Cigarettes quotes

  • GZA: Want some tea?

    RZA: Yea, splash me.

GZA: It's all herbals, man. No caffeine.

RZA: That's what I'm talking about. No caffeine. Caffeine is ridiculous right now, man.

    GZA: Tell me about it.

RZA: Caffeine leads to depression, makes you all irritable, have your heart beating fast. Faster heart rate, you know what I mean? And worse than anything, you drink that coffee, it gives you the shits, you know what I mean? So I try to stay away from that.

GZA: I'm off that shit, anyway.

RZA: Crisp and clean. No caffeine.

  • Taylor: [Taylor is pretending the coffee he and Bill are drinking is champagne] I propose a toast.

Bill: So what should we toast?

Taylor: Oh, god... Paris, in the 1920's. Josephine Baker, the Moulin Rouge. Q'est-ce que c'est...

    [mutters, trails off]

Bill: And also, New York, in the 70's. The late 70's.

    Taylor: Really? Oh, alright.

    Bill: [they touch cups] Cheers.

    Taylor: Cheers.

    [they sip their coffee]

    Bill: Mmm. Délicieux, isn't it?

Taylor: Oh, champagne; nectar of the Gods.
