This Venice Film Festival has entered the fourth day. I thought that the main competition film of the first three days had already triggered enough topics and discussions. Today, it will gradually become flat, but I did not expect the remake of "The Wind and Wind" The film unexpectedly set off a new wave of discussions.

The crew of "The Wind and Wind" on the red carpet in Venice

This film is the second time that director Luca Guadagnino entered the main competition in Venice after "Holiday Surprise" three years ago. His last film "Please call me by your name" was in early 17 At the Sundance Film Festival, the word of mouth exploded, and in the next more than a year, they have achieved very good results in all aspects, and also shine at the Oscars.

I thought that director Guadagnino would take advantage of the heat of sweet tea and go on filming the sequel of "Please call me by your name", but he did not do so, instead, before filming the sequel, he moved ambitiously and turned to a remake. A classic horror film from the 1970s, this is "The Wind and Wind". It has been hot since the eve of Cannes, and has finally finished its premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

The remake of the US version of "The Wind and Wind" is from "The Wind and Wind" in 1977, which was filmed by the horror film master Italian director Dario Aquido. Before the film was released, according to the trailer, everyone was wondering how the director would adapt it. Because of the previous work, many people even thought it would surpass the original version, but some people were not optimistic about the remake.

It is true that after the film was over, there were applause and boos, and it was more of a dazed and confused audience like me. Come out and discuss with friends, everyone agrees that this is a work that is difficult to score. This kind of intense confusion even makes us worry that we will not be in the state to get the next film.

Note: There may be some spoilers below, please read carefully.

Comparison with the original

The purity of this remake is not high, only the two main female characters of Susie and Sara and witch elements are used, and Jessica Harper, who played the original Susie, played a special role in this film.

The film is divided into seven chapters, the first part is called 1977. This part tells the story of Patricia (played by Chloe Moretz) panicking to find Dr. Josef Klemperer for psychological help, leading to the weird nature of the dance academy. The second part is called Palace of Tears, which describes Susie's childhood memories and her formal entry into the dance academy.

So far, the biggest difference from the original version is that this is not a ballet academy, but a modern dance academy with strong Pina style. At the same time, the film also explained the background of the times. Germany, as an important country in the two world wars, had many extremist organizations and terrorist incidents under the influence of the Nazis and the Cold War.

The third and fourth parts of the film are called Borrowing and Taking, respectively. In these two parts Sara comes into contact with Patricia’s diary and reveals to Susie the weirdness of the college. Susie accidentally discovers the horrific behavior of the college’s faculty, Dr. .Josef Klemperer looked for detectives to investigate the academy without news, and then went to himself.

The next fifth part is called In the Mutterhaus. Sara found Patricia and the nest where many other students were victimized before the dance was about to be performed. Susie began to know everything after she was killed.

Up to this point, the adaptation of the film in my opinion is very mediocre. It removes the heavy ink and color of the original version, and combines the expression methods of other works by Aquido. It presents a horror story that fits the urban temperament of Berlin.

However, the sixth part called Suspiriorium completely subverts the above point of view, hard core, guts, blood, "Mother! "X "Witch Carrie", the brain is wide open, 20 minutes dumbfounded.

Compared with the original Susie’s hastily destroying the magic nest, this segment is simply a visual adventure. The sacrificial dance seems to be Matisse’s "Dance" that has increased the saturation by 10 times on the screen.

Matisse "Dance"

The last part is called Epilogue: A sliced-up Pear, which is completely innovative to the old version. Here, the director tries to connect the feelings of the college witch, his mother and Dr. Josef Klemperer, and after watching, we try to analyze the logic behind these relationships, which is a process that breaks down.

In terms of creative techniques, this film is not much different from the old version. With a large number of overhead shots and the use of mirror elements, Thom Yorke's soundtrack also pays tribute to Goblin.

Before and after the press conference

In terms of plot, the film has almost overturned the old version and re-established the story, adding many elements. However, in addition to active analysis, considering the level of the film's screenwriter David Kajganich in the first few films, there have been questions about the plot, whether these elements are reasonable structure or random stacking.

This question became clear after the press conference. The director said that many elements were added without much thought. However, no matter what the answer to this question is, it can prove that the director has greatly increased his ambitions after the success of "Call Me by Your Name". These logics that cannot be rounded up for the time being are likely to be the basis for future sequels.

Some guesses

According to the background specifically mentioned in the film, we discovered that in April 1977, the former Red Army sent a terrorist attack by the German left-wing extremist organization, shooting and killing the then German Federal Attorney General Siegfried-Bubak. Since then, the former Red Army faction frightened Germany for several months and plunged Germany into its worst fear crisis up to then, which we now call the German Autumn.

Among the leaders of the former Red Army faction, there are many women. Its founders Gudrun Ensslin and Ulrike Marie Meinhof are all women.

Here we can learn that the director specifically mentioned this background to point out that there will be some extreme feminist collectives in Berlin under extreme trends, similar to the dance academy in this film.

There is a very mysterious figure in the former Red Army faction, a female leader-Brigitte Mohnhaupt. She was involved in three murders of male politicians after her sentence was released in 1976. Tilda Swinton’s role prototype in this film is very likely It's her.

The actor who plays Dr. Josef Klemperer is actually a professional Klein psychoanalyst, which is the same as his role in this film. Klein's psychoanalysis is a kind of psychoanalysis that mainly focuses on the mother-daughter relationship and the principle of motherhood. The film has a lot of mother images. If there is a sequel, will his role be further developed...
