Although the protagonist of his story, Chiron, is a black man, it does not use clichéd racist plots to earn audience tears; although the protagonist Chiron is gay, it also does not involve any sexual discrimination and engage in affirmative action. These two labels are born with Chiron, it is like men and women, height, fat and thin, just the individual characteristics of each person. "Moonlight Boy" is more like a coming-of-age poem. It has nothing to do with skin color, facial features, or image. It just tells the story of the first half of an ordinary introverted boy's life.
