Family is an identity established by blood relationship. It seems ironic in the movie: The six members of the thief family have no blood relationship, but their mutual love is no less than that of a normal family.
Just like in Thomas Pynchon's novel "Nature is Evil", those degenerate hippies and addicts know how to care and understand others better. Because of the lack of warmth, they understand the importance of warmth to a person.
Therefore, Xindai hated his mother, but gave two unrelated children all the love.
