This is the first time I publish a movie review, and it only represents my personal opinion.

I started this movie because I was obsessed with the song merry Christmas.

The film revolves around the theme of "war and redemption". But the film doesn't reflect war through the battlefield. Instead, the film unfolds through the individual in the war, the soldier. One of Lawrence's words impressed me deeply.

Lawrence was a British prisoner of war who understood Japanese culture and was fluent in Japanese. His words actually expressed the feelings of many soldiers who fought on the battlefield. The life and death on the battlefield and the return to the body are all ordinary human beings. It will be painful and tiring. Lawrence can still say such words after being beaten by Japanese officers, which shows his great kindness.

The relationship between him and the Japanese officer Hara, both enemy and friend, also reflects the inner conflict of individuals in the war. Although Yuan often beats Lawrence, he still respects him very much. Will even do Lawrence a little favor. The most classic is the part where Lawrence was released by drunkenness at Christmas.

Calling yourself Santa and letting Lawrence and Jack go is the best Christmas present for both of them.

There is also a cultural conflict that unfolds through individuals.

The Japanese culture of World War II was very repressive and extreme, and during the long-term repression, these Japanese soldiers became very crazy and irritable. And Captain Noi is the best representative. Noi, like the theme song, is very calm and depressing at first, but when Jack appears, it seems to break all his pretense. Noi's behavior has also become extreme. Almost the entire army was aware of Noi's unusual affection for Jack. When Noi almost went crazy and wanted to execute a British commander, Jack kissed Noi's cheek in front of the whole army, saving the commander and saving himself and Noi.

At the end of their two stories, when the night was quiet, Noi cut Jack's hair as a souvenir. And Jack came out of the remorse for his younger brother before his death.

At the end of the story, after the Japanese surrender in 1946, the relationship between prisoners and officers was reversed. Originally a British prisoner of war.

Here is the final conversation between Yuan and Lawrence

The final final frame is the original smiling face with tears. Some say it's ugly but what I saw was a very kind and genuinely lovely face. I think it was Lawrence's words that freed Yuan and obtained redemption, so he could show such a sincere smile.

The film is about a kind of redemption between each other. Soothing each other's hearts devastated by the long war. There is one more point that I have not mentioned before. This film about human nature not only shows mutual redemption, but also shows the contradiction between human nature's selfish desires and great love "I don't know how to prove it, but I feel it"

In fact, I didn't understand some parts of this movie, my thinking was still confusing, I wasn't very satisfied with what I wrote, and there were still many things I couldn't express. But I still want to express my thoughts.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence quotes

  • Sgt. Gengo Hara: I get it. You think they'll all want to bugger him. So, it's true: all Englishmen are queer.

  • Sgt. Gengo Hara: You're all afraid of queers, aren't you? Samurai aren't afraid of queers.

Col. John Lawrence: War strengthens bonds of friendship between men, but that doesn't mean all soldiers turn queer.

Sgt. Gengo Hara: You're not genuine soldiers. You're lowly POWs. That's why you lack discipline and beg me for favors. You should be ashamed.

Col. John Lawrence: Sergeant Hara, I have nothing to be ashamed of.
