Camille Preaker works as a reporter for a tabloid newspaper. She is not particularly satisfied with the job, including writing stories about crimes such as human neglect and murder. Camille got along well with her boss, Curry, who supported her during her recent hospitalization for self-harm. Camille had carved many words on her body-she had hallucinations on her skin before. Curry reported a report to Wind Gap, her hometown of Missouri, in which one girl was murdered and the other girl was missing.
Once in Wind Gap, Camille can get some information about citizens' crimes, including the family of the murdered girl Ann Nash. The local police did not pay particular attention to the murder, but the town sheriff revealed Camille’s record. He believed that the murderer was a handsome local, not a stranger. Soon, the body of the missing girl Natalie Keene was found in an alley in the town. She and Ann were strangled to death, and all their teeth were pulled out. Camille pieced together a story from the information she received, only for Curry to ask her to stay in Wind Gap to further report the story.
There, Camille reconnected with her estranged mother, Adora, and her half-sister, Ama. Camille never had a good relationship with his mother, because Adora always liked Camille's younger sister, Marianne, who died of illness when Camille was young. Ama, born after Marianne's death, has grown into a spoiled adolescence, acting like a child in front of her mother to hide her wild personality, drug and alcohol use, and sex life. Camille contacted Richard Willis, a detective in Kansas City, and he was sent to investigate the potential of a serial killer.
As Camille continued to investigate, she began to have sex with Richard. Every time he met him, Camille refused to take off her clothes because he was worried that he would refuse her after seeing all her scars. Camille and Amma are getting closer and closer. After attending a party with her sister, the two were drunk and taking drugs, Camille woke up to find her mother Adola taking care of her. She got the pills that made her sick. Camille was horrified to discover that Adora often did this to Emma, and realized that her sister Marianne’s disease was not hers, but the acting Adora’s Minson syndrome. After some investigation, Camille found a letter written by a nurse who cared for Marianne, proving that the nurse had the same suspicions. Camille also discovered that Richard believed that Adora was responsible for the murders of Ann and Natalie. She returned to her mother's house, where Adora poisoned Camille and tried to take care of Camille's wound while taking a bath.
Camille passed out but woke up to find that Richard and the police had arrested her mother. He was shocked to see the extent of her scars. This ended their relationship, even though he claimed earlier that she was really depraved. Adora is accused of murdering Marian and two girls, and Amma is sent to Chicago to live with Camille. Amma initially seemed to be cured from the abuse she received from Adora, but shortly after she started attending a girls’ school in Chicago, a classmate was found murdered and she had six teeth removed. It was revealed that although Adora did kill Marianne, Amma was ultimately responsible for the recent murder, and she did so in part because she was jealous of the attention Adora gave them. Distraught, Camille cuts himself again, but is stopped by Curry and his wife, who treats her as his daughter. At the end of the story, Camille learns to be taken care of as a child and a daughter for the first time.
