The blind boy Merman is studious and caring. He will pick up the fledglings that have fallen from the tree, and then work hard to climb to the tree and put the fledglings back into the nest to avoid being eaten by cats. He would caress the flowers in the fields, the stones in the creek, and spell them with letters. Merman's father will remarry, seeing Merman as a burden. Merman realized his father's estrangement, and when his father came to pick him up from school, he touched his father's hand and burst into tears: I thought you wouldn't come.
His father took Merman to his grandmother's house in the countryside. Merman felt the affection of his grandmother and his sisters, but he often felt insecure. Merman was sent by his father to a carpentry factory to learn woodworking. Merman wept bitterly, feeling that no one loved him because he was blind. As kind and loving as grandma, she would pick up stranded fish and put them back into the water. At the insistence of grandma, father took Merman back. On the way back, the bridge collapsed and Merman fell into the water. After hesitating, his father went to rescue Merman.
Merman was quickly washed away by the rushing stream, and his father could not find Merman. When his father woke up, he saw only Merman's body, and he cried to the sky. A golden light shone on Merman's hand, like the light of God, and when Merman moved his fingers, he was still alive.

The Color of Paradise quotes

  • Mohammad: [crying] Our teacher says that God loves the blind more because they can't see. But I told him if it was so, He would not make us blind so that we can't see Him. He answered "God is not visible. He is everywhere. You can feel Him. You see Him through your fingertips." / Now I reach out everywhere for God till the day my hands touch Him and tell Him everything, even all the secrets in my heart.

  • Mohammad: [crying] Nobody loves me because I'm blind.
