Although many "big-budget" scenes can be perceived as "paying tribute" to past sci-fi/horror movies (it is also an interesting viewing experience to quickly determine which work is a tribute to), but the plot has a more acceptable and reasonable direction. It's by no means a botched copycat; the genre fusion is so clever that every child is so "real" that even the negative aspects of their personalities can be understood and tolerated by the audience. "Monsters" are mirror projections of human beings.
