The Godfather in Hong Kong - Another Gangster Epic

I have to say, Infernal Affairs 2 is simply a remake of The Godfather

There are many similarities in both character creation and plot: the death of the first godfather, the succession of the second godfather, the bloodbath of the four major gangs, the explosion in the car, the betrayal of brothers, and even the atmosphere of the family dance is very the same.

Ah Xiao, played by Wu Zhenyu, can see the shadow of the second generation godfather in him. He is cunning, fierce, and ruthless, but he treats his family with a gentle and kind attitude, which is very much like Corleone. He suddenly lost his father when he was young, had to take over the gang business, suppressed the rebellion, reinvigorated the family, turned the family black and white, and at the end witnessed the betrayal of his brother, these are very like Mike.

The wonderful thing about the movie is that it injects the soul of Infernal Affairs into the plot of the Godfather, making the good and evil of the first protagonist more clear.

Chen Yongren, compared with the first part, was crowned as the son of the gang boss, which added tragedy to the role and highlighted his firm belief. From a righteous genius to a gangster who fools around on the streets, in order to stand out, he has to commit crimes again and again. But only he knows that all he does is to prove that he is a good person!

Liu Jianming, Edison Chen's prosperous beauty can't change my disgust for this character. From the beginning, he was a villain. There is not a trace of good quality in him! From killing Mary to betraying Han Chen at the end, he finally said: I want to be a good person. Such people always live for themselves.

Isn't it funny that Chen Yongren has carried too much burden, lurking for ten years, just to stick to his righteousness, but he was shot dead in the elevator in the end. Liu Jianming, the double agent, betrayed his eldest brother for his own benefit, but in the end he was regarded as a hero of justice.

A good person needs to go through ninety-nine-eighty-one hardships to become a Buddha. When a bad person becomes a Buddha, he just needs to put down the butcher's knife and turn around.

When will this world be more tolerant and fair to good people?

Thousands of years ago, Sima Qian spoke out, good people often do not end well, while most of the wicked enjoy their old age. If the so-called heavenly way, is it evil or not?

The more I write, the more off-topic...

I love that this prequel makes the characters more fleshed out and the good and the evil more clearly defined.

The gangster, who was originally hated, was awed and admired by Wu Zhenyu's performance. It also made people see the helplessness and warmth in his heart, and tried to understand the killing decision of the gangster. This should be the charm of the godfather.

Godfather Hong Kong version, it is not an exaggeration to call it that.

What if there is no Wu Zhenyu!

4.5. Counting the first film that added depth because of this one, it is not an exaggeration to say that "Infernal Affairs" is a gangster epic with a capacity second only to "The Godfather". It is normal for fans who have been baptized by this to look down on similar Korean films.

Infernal Affairs II quotes

  • Mary Hon: [SP Wong and Luk are watching a videotape Ngai Hau secretly recorded of Mary Hon and Wong] Four years ago, you told me to kill Kwun.

SP Wong: [on tape] So what? Want to blackmail me now?

Mary Hon: [on tape] I'm not blackmailing you. We simply passed the point of no return.

SP Wong: [on tape] I'll send everybody away then.

Ngai Wing-Hau: I hired Alan and Johnson to investigate my father's murder. Who would've know? The police conspired to murder my father. A law-abiding citizen.

    Ngai Wing-Hau: Officer Luk.

    [points to videoscreen]

Ngai Wing-Hau: Isn't that a police officer in the video?

    [pauses]

Ngai Wing-Hau: Whether to nail him or not... that's up to you.

[Looks at both cops and leaves]

SP Luk: What a good show. You're so friggin' photogenic.

  • Hon Sam: Play it by ear. Run if you have to.
