This is a rare gay movie with a happy ending, and it was still in that era, in that era when even corrupt countries had to convict homosexuality. Maurice can actually be with Scudder, not Liao Yan. Think Brokeback Mountain, I really thank the director.
But the only thing that made me cry so hard was when Clive stood in front of his window at the end, and suddenly saw Maurice on the lawn of Cambridge University many years ago, waving to him with a big smile, "Hurry up". Come on, Clive, I'm leaving you.
He finally left him. He told him he was in love with Scudder. He wants to say goodbye to the past. It's like closing an old book. The once, bright and youthful campus years have finally become the past in my heart. Let me tell you that being like a gentleman is a respect for you and our past years. Clive, I've told you everything so far, but I'll never say a word again.
I don't blame Maurice, I love him, I love this brave Maurice for love, he is a good match for Scudder, and I love the happy ending. I don't blame Clive either. It's understandable that he gave up his favorite for the sake of his future and career.
I like happy endings, but the only unhappy person in this story is Clive. Although his misfortune was caused by himself, I still feel bad for him, and for him. And innocent Ann.
From the movie, I don't think Ann and Clive have sex. There is a scene where Clive is changing his pajamas, and Ann wakes up suddenly on the bed and sees her husband's naked lower body. His expression is first surprised, then a little curious, and then he turns his head and peeks uncomfortably. This fully shows that she has never seen her husband's lower body. If she really "slept" together, after being married for so long, she would not have such an expression when she saw her husband.
Clive has always loved Maurice, always, Platonic, only spiritual, but true love, deep love. He may be cowardly, he may be selfish, but he still loves Maurice in his own way and protects him like a jade. Maybe not so great, he just really can't be hard on women. Maybe I just think too much, he and Ann are living a normal life as a husband and wife. I'd rather be like this, otherwise Ann is really innocent.
Clive once said that if one day Maurice doesn't love him anymore, the rest of his life will be spent half asleep and half awake. Indeed, a prophecy.
What he saw was always the blond Maurice who waved at him in the sun and told him to hurry up. The person beside the pillow asked him behind him, who are you talking to. He said I was just auditioning for a speech. The movie doesn't say what Clive said when he saw Maurice, maybe just like before, he smiled back at him with a "Okay, I'll come". But I can't go back, I can't go back, the sun was shining.
I always feel sad and regretful, maybe Clive is a little braver, just a little bit, they won't be this ending. I'd rather Clive be really ruthless, and like Maurice, walk forward and say goodbye to the past. Why do you have to suffer like this and hurt others.
long sigh. For the rest of Clive's life, he will sleep forever and live as a walking dead awake.
