meaning of adventure

The last paragraph of the film is a quote from Alan Watts:
Through our eyes, the universe is perceiving itself;
Through our ears, the universe is listening to its cosmic harmonies;
And we are the witness through which the universe becomes conscious of its Glory, of its magnificence.

The pride and ambition of Antarctic research workers is on the paper. It is truly admirable.

They went to Antarctica, not for a simple adventure, not to show off their travel experience, but really with the determination and courage to know the world. The word "encounters" is used with extreme precision and conveys this connotation vividly.

There’s even a short section in the film that contrasts and criticizes the act of simply taking risks and doing something pointless for the sake of the Guinness World Records. The man who decided to fly over the South Pole by plane in order to try a way to reach the South Pole that no one had tried before is silently mocked by the film. People have to start thinking carefully about the meaning of adventure.

Backpackers and expeditions should not be one's own bragging rights, but should be activities for the sake of something truly meaningful.

Encounters at the End of the World quotes

  • Werner Herzog: It occurred to me that in the time that we spent with him in the greenhouse possibly three or four languages have died. In our efforts to preserve endangered species we seem to overlook something equally important. To me, it's a sign of a deeply disturbed civilization, where tree-huggers and whale-huggers in their weirdness are acceptable, while no one embraces the last speakers of a language.

  • Werner Herzog: For me, the best description of hunger is the description of bread. A poet said that once I think. For me, the best description of freedom is what you have in front of you. You're travelling a lot.
