Citizens of the Earth

--- "In the wilderness, King Lear asked the Earl of Gloucester: 'How do you see the world?' The
blind Earl of Gloucester replied: 'I see with emotion.'"
Perhaps not long ago , maybe in the near future, human beings will admit that they are only part of this earth. We can choose the animal that accompanies us, but it must be voluntary and mutual like family, lovers; we will consciously eat the food we deserve in our food hierarchy, not because of greedy desire. Choose numb acquisition; we will understand that true beauty is given by nature, not wrapped in pain; we know that all beings suffer, so we choose to magnify happiness, but we also know that this should not be built on the suffering of other beings ; We should be clear that the unilateral progress of human beings will not be recognized, and the crystallization of our wisdom should not be used to harm other life... And is all this in the past or in the future? In short not now, but I can feel its faint but beautiful light.
First and foremost, Citizens of the Earth is a very reflective documentary. Through the lens, you can feel that the photographer tried his best to show the most real and cruel picture to us outside the screen, and to expose the pain that animals have suffered from humans in front of humans. We shed tears because of this, and are those tears from God's perspective or from empathy? What will happen after the tears? As stated in the title: The three stages of acceptance of the truth: 1. ridicule 2. strongly disapprove 3. admit. I think the real purpose of this film should be to make it impossible for human beings to laugh and object. All we can do now is to admit the truth!
People want to be happy in their lifetime and like beautiful things, and for this, some people can sacrifice the truth of things for numb enjoyment. But is this what we really want? Between the truth of pain and the curtain of happiness, I would rather choose the former, because only in this way can I feel my true existence.
After watching this film, I suddenly realized that what I saw was reality instead of reality. People cover the truth with a black cloth and walk on it. The beauty built on it is shaky, and sooner or later we will fall into the black hole of reality.
Sometimes I even wish that human beings are weak and incompetent, so that they do not prey on other life. But sometimes I want us to have power, because we need power to expose, and we need power to stop this from happening!
Finally, I ended with the most warning sentence in the film:
"Although they are not of our race, they do not belong to us. They belong to another country, but they are trapped in the web of life and time together with human beings, and they experience the same The Glory and Misery of the Earth"

Earthlings quotes

  • [first lines]

title card: earth-ling n. - One who inhabits the earth.

Narrator: Since we all inhabit the earth, we are all considered earthlings. There is no sexism, racism, or speciesism in the term 'earthling'. It encompasses each and every one of us: warm- or cold-blooded, mammal, vertebrate or invertebrate, bird, reptile, amphibian, fish and human alike.

  • Narrator: It is the human earthling who tends to dominate the earth, oftentimes treating other fellow earthlings and living beings as mere objects. This is what is meant by 'speciesism'. By analogy with racism and sexism, speciesism is a prejudice or attitude or bias in favor of the interests of the members of one's own species and against those of members of other species.
