It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a movie of more than three hours, especially in a non-theatrical line, there are always places where I want to fast-forward more or less. I highly recommend this German movie. It doesn't make people want to fast-forward at all. It doesn't feel like three hours fast. The whole story is told flatly and slowly, giving people a special sense of reality. Explores art, war, history, freedom, and love. The film quality of the picture, the color composition are beautiful, and the soundtrack is also wonderful. Real things are beautiful.

Does this span of time and space mean that the art of future generations is a reflection of history? As Nazi-era painters gained recognition by painting blurry photos (related to Nazi history)? But the basic point is clear (though not necessarily true) that the film aims to point out that artistic creation is not a sudden inspiration, but is held back by history, it is spoken by history. So does such a theme need to be expressed through melodrama with so many coincidences? I see some good reviews praising this film because it adds a new means of reflection (or alternative expression) to the classic melodrama. But I feel that it is the fact that the alternative expression is embedded in this melodramatic framework that makes the movie so-so.

As a movie, this kind of editing is unacceptable, but it's tethered to a few particular favorites. In the end, the professor collapsed in front of Kurt's collage and copy painting. What caused him to collapse was not political wrangling, nor ethical torture, but the re-presentation of reality. He didn't dare to look at it.

Never Look Away quotes

  • Kurt Barnert: You smoke?

Professor Carl Seeband: Sixty-three is the right age to start. The consequences will hardly catch up with me.

  • Kurt Barnert: Not random. Real. Coherent. Consistent. Only reality is consistent. Every reality is consistent. Everything that's true is beautiful. Let's suppose I say six numbers to you now. It's just stupid. Pointless. But if the six numbers are the winning lottery numbers, then they mean something. They have consistency, value, almost beauty. It's the same with the photographs. I want the truth.
