1. In the first Antonioni in the true sense, the calculation conditions must be understood, and even a superficial opinion of one or two points can be seen. Frankly speaking, it’s hard. It’s really hard to watch the works of these directors, but I’m happy that I’m really inspired this time. This humble opinion is enough for me to improve my viewing experience with half the effort. .
2. Since I just jumped out of a book with a classic Hollywood narrative structure, I was very unaccustomed to watching such a realist work that completely deviates from the conventional narrative structure. Finally, when the progress bar reached 20 minutes, I found that there was neither a protagonist, nor a protagonist. There are also no so-called motivational events, small plots, subplots, conflicts, story spines, etc. that should appear in about 15 minutes... There is nothing left. The good thing is that I have a natural affinity for realist works, compared to freewheeling Sina. Tide, it made it easier for me to endure 10 minutes of boring episodes with no dialogue. Because I am particularly obsessed with the shaping of the environment and the representation of the emotions of individual characters in the environment.
3. I start rewatching the entire movie, rewinding to the beginning. The film does not have a specific protagonist, the environment becomes the leg of the film, and the characters are tied together. The characters are not pure characters. They have no story, almost no conflict, and the emotions that erupt are single and negative (boring, disappointed, anxious, conceited) These emotions and the environment snuggle together.
The film emphasizes the environment everywhere, outdoor, indoor, and the outdoor environment resembles chimney-shaped buildings, unbuilt buildings, neighbors and the heroine's house. Most of the interiors emphasize hanging paintings, decorative objects, beds, and sofas.
Amazingly, it is these inescapable environments that derive the emotions of the characters in the scene. This shocked me. There is a magical feeling of "nothing but echoes". And the emotions created by the interaction between the environment and the characters have reached the deepest expression of the film - the characters are out of reality, they are too lonely.
4. The composition of each frame is almost perfect. This is what I noticed at the beginning, and I couldn't help but pause to look at the proportions in the whole frame. In the external environment, the people are very small, and sometimes the characters are just a point in the picture, and the big vision is full of industrial buildings. In the internal environment, it occupies three-quarters of the screen (the stock exchange). Even the back view is huge. The lines are so stingy that they often don't say a word, and the master's storytelling follows the law of diminishing returns - the more you say, the less the audience feels. (This is also repeated in Godard's films.) Even ambient sound becomes language (fans, razors, glassware sliding and breaking on the table). In this way, the audience is forced to think and experience constantly, to observe and enter the picture more forcefully, and it looks very tired, but after understanding it, there is a sense of achievement.
5. The mise-en-scene is extremely smooth. The movement of characters in the internal scenes and the frequency of the same frame have a strong speech function, and their ability to "speak" depends on the mise-en-scene that will never make the audience feel uncomfortable. I will post a video explaining it later.
6. The first scene and the 6-minute empty scene before the end left me amazed. How can I describe it? It is the feeling of watching a hero appear in a martial arts movie. As soon as he shoots, you know this is What rank. The piano has only 88 keys, but there are so many pianists in the world, because some people are born with their own way of constantly reconnecting these 88 keys. The same is true of movies. There are thousands of empty shots. The first time I saw them meet and talk, they said more than any long-winded speech in any movie, and I understood.
