Everyone should watch American animation

As soon as I say this, many people will say that I worship foreigners. Wait a minute, before sticking the label, let's see what I said, right?

Let's talk history first. Now you may not believe it, China's animation used to be in the leading position in the world. As early as the 1920s, Chinese animation has begun to develop. During this period, Chinese animation almost kept pace with Hollywood animation, and added more unique oriental elements. "Shanghai Fine Arts Film Studio" began to produce animations in the 1950s and reached its peak in the 1980s. As the first batch of "post-90s" born in the early 1990s, I was fortunate to spend my childhood watching their classic works and introducing Hollywood animations. Tan", to the cartoon "Cube Mansion", "Little Sloppy", "Shuke and Beta"... Unfortunately, Chinese animation disappeared along with many other art forms that we were good at. In today's "Pleasant Goat" era, I just want to feel sorry for the children who watch cartoons and grow up in the brainwashing of the mentally handicapped culture. (Yes, I don't mind scolding these cartoons with real names)

Pull away, go back to the present. The development that originally went hand in hand, while Chinese animation was busy returning to the pre-liberation (really pre-liberation), Hollywood did not stop developing. Although Disney himself does not like to make money for the sake of making money, after his death, the Disney company developed a standard formula for making money, so it was really disappointing to hold a book of Andersen's fairy tales. But at the same time, other small animation companies began to develop quietly. In the 1990s, a large number of high-level TV animations with different styles from the previous "Tom and Jerry" began to emerge. Many people are familiar with "SpongeBob SquarePants", "South Park" , "The Simpsons" all appeared at this time. These animations are no longer purely for children, but as serious works, many of which are not even suitable for children to watch. Most of these animations come from small network TV companies that developed independently, and many of them were started by imaginative young people on a whim and then started by a few friends.

SpongeBob SquarePants

Finally getting back to the point, I said these cartoons are what everyone should watch. Before, I have repeatedly told everyone how important it is to protect the imagination of children. These cartoons are a good proof. They are also works of adults, and the gap in imagination is simply worlds apart. Not much nonsense, just a few chestnuts:

South Park

"South Park," most modern American TV animations is deeply ironic, but this one I consider "the most ironic animation". The anime started airing in 1997 and now has 22 seasons. The protagonists are a few elementary school students, the style of painting is very simple (or even simple), and the story revolves around them, and every episode will have all kinds of weird and funny events. But the core is basically a discussion of human nature, modern society, or current politics. They show the various consequences of human behavior in an exaggerated form. For example, in the last two episodes, they used Amazon as an example to talk about a modern people's work-online shopping-work-online shopping cycle. With the release of "Red Dead Redemption", I ridiculed a game house that can do anything to clear the game.

Abandoned shopping mall in the age of online shopping

Indeed, these are animations for adults, and the "Pleasant Goat" category is for children, but even some domestic animations for all audiences are vastly different from these American animations. In fact, in the final analysis, the current domestic cartoons (and TV series) are underestimating the IQ of the audience, while many American animations overestimate the IQ of the audience, such as the following (emphasis added):

rick and morty

"Rick and Morty", this is a relatively new animation. It premiered in 2013. It was originally a parody of "Back to the Future", and it has been highly sought after since its launch. The protagonist of the story is a mad scientist whose morality is seriously debated. He takes his dumb grandson to explore all kinds of strange universes, time and space all day long. The animation certainly has super irony too, but that's not where it shines. Many people may think that the highlight of this animation is its big brain hole, which includes almost all kinds of science fiction films, novels, and even conspiracy theories. But I want to tell you as a filmmaker that its greatness lies not only in its brain holes, but also in its extremely particular story structure and shooting techniques.

Echoing the foreshadowing of the first season

Just in the 7th episode of the third season (a miracle in the history of animation), in just twenty minutes it is in the context of a parallel recreated universe, telling a political conspiracy film about a good politician who is carried away by power , a redemption police and gangster film about a corrupt police officer who sacrificed his life to save his partner, a touching youth film about a few students truanting from school to pursue their dreams, and a tragic science fiction film about a sweatshop worker fighting for oppression but falling victim to it.

Twenty minutes, four complete genre films with strong reversals, interlocking, and the stories are connected to each other, and the end of the film also concluded "a speech about politics, order, friendship, and rights". And it echoes a line buried in the first season. In addition, the screenwriter often silently hides various lines that instantly blow up the world view in the fast speed of speech. The level of sophistication in this animation script is simply unusable! Can! think! Proposal! to describe. It is no exaggeration to call it a "drama".

full of irony

Now let's look back at "Pleasant Goat", "Bear Haunted"...

Do you feel insulted to your intelligence?

Okay, that's all for today, see you next time
