Incredible film, rekindled my admiration for Thomas. From the stunning lady in "The English Patient", to the fashion bitch in "Shopper's Monologue", to the touching tragic character "I've Always Loved You", I saw an incredible woman, a A woman who seems to have sold her soul to the devil and still maintains the holiness of an angel.
Life is unfair to people, but Juliette's life seems to be more difficult than others. As a mother, she chose to take the initiative to stop her son's breathing when she learned that her son had an incurable disease and was struggling in pain. to ease the pain of her son, but her unintelligible behavior is that she was imprisoned and spent 15 years in prison. She lost her parents, she lost her friends, she lost everything. But when she was released from prison, she was warmly welcomed by her sister, and slowly integrated into a normal life in the future.
In fact, the story itself is really not too innovative for me. The story of losing a child in middle age, losing everything, being isolated from society for a period of time and slowly recovering can be said to be nothing new. But one of the things that makes this film different in the rain is the deep and touching bond between the sisters, and another is Thomas' amazing performance.

Looking at Thomas' resume, I found that she was a woman born in England, but as far as I can see, her deep eye sockets, pale skin, and blurred and elegant eyes completely match the temperament of a French woman in my impression. And her French feels really good. There is a scene in the movie where Lea's adopted daughter says why her aunt has a strange accent, and Lea explains to her daughter that it's because Juliette has lived in England for a long time. But to be honest, I didn't feel it, but her Vietnamese adopted daughter spoke bluntly and strangely.

Many of the scenes in the film are simply stacked with fantastic photography. The afterglow of dusk crossed the street and reflected on some old furniture. Juliette was leaning against the gray windowsill, smoking a cigarette gloomily, her melancholy eyes staring blankly at the air ahead, as if thinking about the death of her son. The lens is slowly pulled away, showing the overall gloomy atmosphere. This film language skillfully expresses Juliette's desperate but incomprehensible mood.
Movies framed with emotions often cannot be accurately described in words. Needless to say, 5-star recommendation.

There is no mother who doesn't love her own flesh and blood, and the movie starts by telling us that the heroine killed her 6-year-old son 15 years ago and just got out of prison, and everyone betrayed her relatives; only the little sister secretly felt sorry for the big sister, but she was also very secretive about her behavior. I don’t understand and don’t dare to ask; after being released from prison, my sister stayed at her sister’s house for a while, and the whole family felt unfamiliar and indifferent to this aunt who suddenly appeared. The sensitive question cannot be avoided: why was she sentenced to so many years, and why did she kill her own flesh and blood. How should she explain and reconcile with her sister-in-law and their daughters (my sister seems to have the shadow of her sister's marriage and childbirth and has never wanted her own children to travel thousands of miles to Vietnam to adopt Asian girls) Over the years, she has been ignorant of this fact Without saying a word, when everyone pressed her at a friend's party to ask her why it took so many years for her to appear, she told the truth, I was sentenced to 15 years for murder and everyone heard that she was joking and laughed. She confided to her sister in pain: there is no excuse for death. The death of a child is the deepest and deepest prison (for mom)

Everything in the movie is for KST, especially those two hours of lukewarm drama. The performance is so perfect, it's a pity not to be nominated.

I've Loved You So Long quotes

  • Léa: The novel's narration is impersonal and incomplete, as he refused to give one world view. He knows it's multiple, that intentions are multiple as are truths.

  • Léa: We were there! Didn't we matter?

Juliette Fontaine: Do you think others matter then - that one cares what they think or do? You were all well and alive! You belonged to the kind one comes to hate for the mere fact that they are there.
