He loves her but shows his love by doing shady things to hurt her. But if he doesn't hurt her, he may never get a chance to get close to her. This is his desire for her. Desire is aggressive, an act of aggression. He wasn't as lustless as he himself said, because although he didn't want to kiss or go to bed, he wanted to go to the cafe with her for ice cream.
And love is tender. He wanted to protect this tender love, so he gave up his desire and chose death. He wants the love to last forever. His love is a bud that stops growing, close to death, but alive, in his peeping she is alive, and when he stops peeping, she feels she is dying.
She was attracted to his love because she was puzzled, and finally she realized he was right. Love exists. Love exists in the imagination, in the mind, and desire in the body.
