I was particularly impressed by the moment before Madio committed suicide.
The following is a description of Madio before his suicide, with serious spoilers.
======
That day is New Years. He handles a drug trafficking case at the police station. The rich boss refuses to plead guilty and finds a poor man as his scapegoat. Madio was inexplicably angry. He not only hated the rich, but also the eyes of the poor who were like a pool of stagnant water. Madio wanted to do something in his rage, but was stopped by his colleagues.
The rich man also said, let me go home quickly, and I want to celebrate the New Year with my family.
During the period, Madio's lover came to the police station to find him and asked him why he lied to her and why he abandoned her. Madio was angry again, and he yelled back at her, saying that he was working now and didn't want to tell her this. The lover leaves in anger.
In fact, this lover should actually believe Madio, because she came to him with the necklace that Madio gave her. I believe there must be a reason for him to do so. The result was beyond her expectations and beyond his expectations.
Madio always seems to be unable to control himself at critical moments. It's as if he contradicts the professor in the test and ends up failing it.
After the end of this section of the police station, the camera cuts to Madio's parents' house.
Here is a completely different scene. Bright living room, table full of delicious food, mother, siblings, sister-in-law, nephew and niece. It belongs to every ordinary family, once a year, forgetting ordinary troubles and enjoying ordinary happy days. Madio looked at the warm scene in front of him and made a smile.
He was wearing a thick leather coat and never seemed to take it off, even in that warm family.
He only stayed for a while before leaving his parents' house. Brother Nikolai wanted him to stay a little longer, but he left anyway.
Go back to your rental house. The lights are dim. He wanted to eat something, but the food in the refrigerator was broken. Called his lover, but no one answered. Noisy, raucous New Year's programmes are playing on TV. He watered the flowers on the balcony. He looked out the window, went back into the house, and closed the window.
The year is over and the countdown on TV begins. The hosts started the countdown, and Madio watched the TV for a while,
Quietly open the window,
to the balcony,
Flip down the railing.
Without the slightest hesitation.
=====
After reading this paragraph, I was excited and scared, because I silently felt that I empathized with Madio. . .
What happened in the police station is so irritating, the rich boss has done all the bad things, and he has hired the poor as his scapegoat, completely ignoring the preciousness of other lives. The poor are so silent, even if Madio is willing to help him, he does not intend to confess and help the evil conspiracy succeed. As a colleague of the police, I have nothing to do, just thinking about not getting into trouble.
Madio was so angry, angry at this shameless situation. But he was powerless to change, and he was full of anger at his own powerlessness.
When I came to my parents' house, everything was so warm and my family was so happy. Madio made a smile, it wasn't a fake smile, even if he wasn't happy inside, it was his tenderness.
His gentleness kept him from sharing his anger with his family. So he only stayed for a while and left.
But the contrast and coexistence of coldness and tenderness, shamelessness and innocence seemed to deepen his fear.
Back in his rental house, the phone of his lover who couldn't get through, and the food he couldn't eat seemed to make him even more uncomfortable.
But the flowers and plants on the balcony seemed to comfort him. He watered the flowers and plants, looked at the city and the dark night, then quietly lit the window of the balcony and returned to the house, seemingly calm.
Then, for some unknown reason, when he saw the noisy countdown on the TV, he calmly opened the window and jumped down calmly. There was no hesitation.
I always felt like Madio didn't intend to die until he finished watering the flowers. Until the whitewashed countdown on TV gave him a complete blow. This shameless world has nothing to cherish anymore.
