I think it might be better to label this movie as a "Japanese martial arts" movie. As a fan of martial arts novels, the final battle really brought tears to my eyes.
Personally, I feel that it is not necessary to compare with Hayao Miyazaki, and it is still a bit interesting to compare with Makoto Shinkai. There is no need to criticize Hosoda Mamoru blindly. The art of film itself needs to be inclusive. A lot of people in the comments have an academic tone, but I think the lower end of the audience age range for this movie was set lower at the beginning of shooting than similar movies. Constructing a complex plot and worldview can meet the needs of adult audiences for the plot, but it will undoubtedly increase the difficulty for children to understand the film to a large extent. If I were to take my 10-year-old cousin to see an animated movie, this would definitely be a priority. This is a movie that little men should watch!
