In the whole documentary, what impressed me the most was the Faster and Faster in the middle.
Faster and faster, primitive agro-industry;
Faster and faster, exploit deforestation;
Faster and faster, warming, melting and shrinking...
In the first part, the soothing tone talks about the slow evolution process of the earth, soil, water, air, plants... These can be regarded as familiar knowledge coupled with aerial photography from a large perspective. To be honest, I was a little distracted. Take a look at the news. But as the tone gradually shifted, I gathered my scattered eyes and just watched. The moving little people, the tall buildings built one after another, and the scenes that can be said to be terrifying. At that moment I felt that this was a more terrifying documentary than a horror movie.
Humans are like the "worms" of the earth, which are numerous and destructive. Natural disasters and man-made disasters, life and death. The accumulated living things of the earth for hundreds of thousands of years were instantly wiped out. Countless species are extinct or endangered. In the history of the development of the earth, the emergence of human beings is not even overnight, it seems as short as a few seconds or a few minutes. Short but huge.
There is a metaphor that has a deep influence on me: "The stars buried in the early days of Pangu -- ore." Burying the stars in the soil sounds as romantic as it sounds, but the reality is as cruel as it sounds. The stars are constantly being mined and mined, and the starlight is dimmed.
In fact, in addition to these, I have another great feeling: my life is too beautiful! Living in China, I did not worry about the lack of water, electricity, and the environment, nor did I worry about the bad atmosphere and lack of resources. West-to-East Gas Transmission, South-to-North Water Diversion, West-to-East Electricity Transmission... There are endless examples. I often feel how lucky I am to live in a country and how lucky I am.
The documentary was shot in 2009, twelve years ago. Now, I see nations in action, defending the planet and defending the homeland. But what will happen in the future, no one can predict. In the past two years, we have experienced too many fires, typhoons, torrential rains... all of them have declared to the world that human beings are insignificant and vulnerable in the face of natural disasters, just like mayflies in the water of ants on the ground.
Is there really no way? I do not know. Does everyone have the awareness to protect the earth? I do not know either. All I know is that I should make some changes and get rid of the bad habits of wasting water, electricity and resources in the past. As advertised: start small, start small.
