Elegy

The biggest surprise in a man's life is old age.
Years quietly accumulate into a layer of old dust on the table. Still, many times David didn't feel overly sad about it, until Consuela showed up. That youthful luster and perfect curves made him stare every minute. And this kind of beauty also aroused his desire for youth. Consuela's youth makes him panic, then bewildered, then childish, off-balance.
Why are you doing this to me?
Love is born from feelings, and feelings often lead you and me to deviate, making love difficult and complicated.
David is stuck with the so-called balance in love. Possessed, but made him terrified. Preset a hurt character for himself, allowing suspicion to arise out of thin air. The most inescapable thing is the fear between gain and loss.
Until one day, Consuela suffered an illness, and this situation suddenly made him feel that a balance was finally created. No longer afraid of losing, no longer difficult to face.
Unfortunately, those good times never teach people to cherish.
I will miss you.
I am here.

Elegy quotes

  • George O'Hearn: Beautiful women are invisible.

David Kepesh: Invisible? What the hell does that mean? Invisible? They jump out at you. A beautiful woman, she stands out. She stands apart. You can't miss her.

George O'Hearn: But we never actually see the person. We see the beautiful shell. We're blocked by the beauty barrier. Yeah, we're so dazzled by the outside that we never make it inside.

  • David Kepesh: I think it was Betty Davis who said old age is not for sissies. But it was Tolstoy who said the biggest surprise in a man's life is old age. Old age sneaks up on you, and the next thing you know you're asking yourself, I'm asking myself, why can't an old man act his real age? How is it possible for me to still be involved in the carnal aspects of the human comedy? Because, in my head, nothing has changed.
