"Shrinking" life is actually very similar to the popular "low desire life": the earth's resources are facing exhaustion, and we should adopt an environmentally friendly life that saves and reduces desires. The male protagonist in the film is also facing life difficulties and cannot afford some of the needs in life, such as buying a house, then "shrinking" becomes a way out for him to deal with life crisis.
