To say that the story of "Love When the Plague Spreads" is magical and realistic, it is magical in simple terms. It tells that in 1880, a poor boy poet in Colombia liked a rich girl, but she married a doctor's wife. He waited for 51 years 7 months, until the doctor died in 1930, before he could be with the woman. This story is not a tragedy, the woman lived a happy life, and the idiot lived happily because he "rationally" separated sex from love. While waiting for his lover, he slept with 622 women and wrote it in his diary .
Director Mike Newell is British (“Four Weddings and One Funeral”, “Harry Potter” episode 4); screenwriter Ronald Harwood is South African (played at the London Playhouse and wrote “Pianist/Piano Battle Song/ "Battlefield Man", adapted from the screenplay of "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly"); and the first actor to play the poet, Javier Bardem, is a Spanish, (playing the murderous killer in "No Country for Old Men" won the 2008 Oscar for Best Supporting Actor); American Benjamin Bratt plays the doctor, and actress Giovanna Mezzogiorno is Italian. Not counting the other behind-the-scenes people, everyone uses English to play the strange story of Colombia, which suffered from the cholera plague, from 1880 to 1930. It can be seen that there are many difficulties.
To be honest, Mike Newell, who is not so experienced in making blockbusters, is now in a Spanish-speaking place in Cartagena, Colombia, dealing with this 51-year-old story in the era of cholera plague. At the beginning of the film, a few short clips explain the plot like a duck's back, which is quite rough, the actors are weak, and the scenes are a bit unpleasant.
On the other hand, the actors of the United Nations play from young to old, no matter how hard they try, it is difficult for them to act naturally. It is really difficult for them. However, having said that, this difficult film is finally acceptable, in fact, it is barely an achievement. After all, in this day and age, it is not easy for ordinary people to read this novel. Now everyone can get a general understanding of a strange literary story in just two hours, which is also a good harvest.
