Seed and Moonlight

With the withdrawal of U.S. troops and the return of the Taliban, Afghanistan has become the focus of the world, and people are waiting to see where it will go. Before August of this year, I didn't know much about Afghanistan, our troubled neighbor. Since August 15th, after reading the overwhelming reports, I have a vague understanding of the war there, people's desire for peace, and the difficulty of women's survival... But after watching this movie, I really felt that I had been through war and chaos. How distorted the volatile Afghan society is and how difficult it is for people, especially the vulnerable, to survive in this land. In the story of the boy Suleiman, the mad elephant king is covered with hard iron scales, and he drives his minions to do evil. I think this is a reflection of the distortion of Afghan society. Idris, the young man who joined the Taliban, gave the impression of doing all kinds of evil—reporting his teacher and sending him to prison; chasing two girls obsessively, nearly shooting them to death. However, this young man used to be a good student in the teacher's mouth! What makes him look like this, he regards the knowledge taught by his teacher as useless; his consciousness is kidnapped by intolerance, and he keeps saying that he wants to destroy the enemies of Islam, but he swings the butcher's knife at his compatriots. Maybe it was the years of war that made his knowledge far less reliable than guns, or maybe it was the propaganda of extremist teachings that alienated this young man, making his mind no longer sober and his heart no longer kind. If the Afghan society is like a crazy elephant king, then the Taliban fighters represented by him are like the minions of the elephant king... In such a distorted society, how difficult it is for vulnerable groups to survive! The heroine Parwana's father, who has had one leg amputated, doesn't get the respect that disabled people deserve - Idris rudely asks him to stand up to answer questions; he can't even take his crutches when he's caught. Women can't go out without a man, and even if they go out, they will be shrouded in burqa, and even if they can't see the road clearly, they mustn't be noticeable. When Parwana's father was captured, her family was in immediate trouble, and Parwana had to disguise herself as a man to become a breadwinner. And she's not alone - another girl has had her hair cut, changed her name, worked odd jobs on the street to make money, and maybe many others are doing the same! Seeing this bloody reality, I couldn't help but sigh: "Where is Afghanistan going? Is there any hope?" This is where life comes to an abrupt end. The Elephant King's cold heart was warmed by compassion, and the hard scales also peeled off layer by layer. It stopped attacking, knelt in front of Suleiman, and finally returned the seed. I think that this precious seed is called

There is no so-called violent conflict, watching everything happen particularly peacefully. Life is not a fairy tale for a prince and princess, but just trying to live.

I dare not watch such a good film a second time?

The Breadwinner quotes

  • Fattema's Cousin: Son, daughter, which is it? Gather your things, we are leaving now!

Fattema: I am not leaving without Parvana! We have to wait!

Fattema's Cousin: Count yourself lucky I am taking you, old woman. The girl and the baby are of more worth.

  • Sulayman: My name is Sulayman! My mother is a writer. My father is a teacher. And my sisters always fight each other. One day, I found a toy on the street. I picked it up. It exploded. I don't remember what happened after that because it was the end.
