The Ten Commandments - Kieslowski's Cautionary Book

"I won't spy on you any more"----------This is the last sentence of the male protagonist in the sixth film of the "Ten Commandments" series, and it is also the scene that left the deepest impression on me. Ten films with seemingly independent themes, like ten fables, constitute a complete cautionary tale. What interests me is that Kielovsky, who has a strong Catholic background, did not give the film "The Ten Commandments" a specific religious content. He uses the exquisite form of TV and movies to show the various experiences of ordinary people, and behind it is actually permeated with Keith's thinking on the ultimate problem of mankind and his deep sympathy.
It is foolish to constantly think about the meaning of your own existence, because life is completely incomprehensible. Mathematics attempts to simplify and abstract the most complex problems, and sometimes the conclusion is still two words - "no solution". Real-life incomprehension is a recurring state. People fall to the ground all alone, endure the fate that binds the body tightly, and experience the fierce battle between reason and emotion in the field of the soul. Life always puts us in a dilemma, under illusion and temptation, impulsive choices are inevitable. The Ten Commandments create a unique "substitution experience". What do we do when we face the conundrum of the characters in the movie? Maybe it doesn't matter how we choose, we must suffer for the choice. What others suffer, I will suffer, and no one can escape the judgment of the heart. The Ten Commandments, through the life experiences of contemporary people, actually confirms the ancient proposition that "the world is not benevolent, and the common people are the dogs". The Poles of the late 1980s had the same problems that our ancestors faced thousands of years ago. That's what makes the Ten Commandments a classic.
Keith is a good storyteller, and an underlying dramatic tension exists in the placid narrative rhythm. After watching these ten films, I specifically read the script of "The Ten Commandments", which is said to be written for the film version. The biggest difference between the TV version and the movie version is that it is closer to the original face of life, which is so cruel and suffocating, but it makes you want to stop. In my life, I have been unable to get rid of the influence of Keith, and the images of "Ten Commandments" have been flashing in my mind these days, which shows that the poisoning is not shallow. Attentive viewers will find that the same person appears in eight of the Ten Commandments. Sometimes he looks on with a blank face, and sometimes he flashes by like a shadow. This is symbolic and the only religious trace of the film. Keith's "Ten Commandments" reminded me of our country's "Three Words and Two Beats", each story is drawn from daily life, but it is a little righteous. Perhaps, the highest state of punishing evil and promoting good is not to persuade the world to not transgress with the ultimate and complete doctrine, but to erect a mirror in everyone's heart and constantly examine their own actions. Lying, betrayal, covetousness, adultery, murder, all of which are considered sins in doctrine or law, why do we still do it every day? What exactly do ethics, conscience, and morality mean, and are they the criteria for distinguishing us from animals? These questions will never be answered. When we are in the situation and face life calmly, the only thing we can do is to carefully observe what we look like in the mirror in our hearts, and everything can be said for itself.
Movies that make you think are always at the top of my personal list, and Kee's The Ten Commandments is no exception. Take a moment to look at this masterpiece, and we will learn more about ourselves and the essential meaning of life.
