The plot is quite satisfactory, and there is nothing special about it, so how many outfits did Faye change?

"I was that image—usually it was the blond, strong, conventionflaunting, groundbreaking woman. Vicki was really the first in what would become something of the archetypal character for me— a woman pushing the envelope. These were women who found out who they were, who expressed who they were, and who were able to function as complete human beings, the way men do in the world. From Vicki would come Diana Christensen in Network, and later Laura Mars and others. That I didn't take the typical roles that were there for actresses, where the women are more traditional, feminine, and demure, was one part me and one part the star machine.

"Those groundbreaking roles came to me with a great deal of regularity. I was awfully good at acting them, but they weren't necessarily me. The irony is that these roles created my career, gave me the chance to strut my stuff, to accomplish what I wanted to accomplish in my work, to win the Oscar. And yet with Vicki, this transmutation, the change, the journey away from who I am, began. All these women were dressed to the nines, while I yearn to dress in the simplest clothes now, and I do. But it's been a long journey getting there. I dress in khakis and white shirts and that's about all I wear anymore. But back then, it was all about how you looked, what your hair looked like, what your makeup looked like, and I bought into that illusion in far too great a way."
