"Dream" is a film full of aesthetics, absurdity and satire. The story sense of the movie alone is not as good as that of "Rashomon", but "Dream" seems to be the same as its name, it is not logical and coherent, it is the artistry outside the story, it is the feeling of thoughts flowing with the wind, This is very advanced. "Rashomon" is about human nature. Different people see different worlds, revealing the subjective selfishness of human nature. "Dream" is about life. Different people share the same fate. It seems that there are many tragedies, but in fact it sings praises for the bleakness and blemishness of life.
The eight stories of "Dream" have no logical relationship but have rhythmic dark lines. The stories experience different silhouettes of fate. These stories are related to the experience of a generation in Japan (World War II, the Hiroshima nuclear incident), and also related to different stages of life (Sun Rain) , Van Gogh Dialogue, Peach Blossom Village). The clip of "Sweeping Demons" imagines the tragic fate of human beings. Due to nuclear radiation, it has mutated to grow a "one-horn", which makes people miserable. This picture is very similar to the soul of the punished in hell in "The Divine Comedy", wailing and degenerating forever. . When the story is getting more and more depressing, the "Village of Watermills" segment begins, Tao Yuanming's "Peach Blossom Spring" has such a paragraph "the mountain has a small mouth, as if there is light... After walking dozens of steps, suddenly enlightened", and this story Like the Peach Blossom Garden, the dialogue with the old man rethinks what life is, and the movie ends with a celebratory funeral.
In the movie, I always thought that Akira Kurosawa was very pessimistic about the future destiny of mankind. It was not until the last paragraph that I seemed to feel the "beauty of hope" he wanted to express. This is a dream.
