A memorable viewing experience

After watching Rohmer's films very hard again and still unable to feel the subtleties, I almost gave up my attempt to appreciate art films. I found myself too analytically inclined, and analysis destroys the subtleties. What a good director tries to communicate is his personal feeling. First of all, he must be able to truly experience some subtle or sublime or beautiful feeling, and then he must have enough talent to show it. As an audience, you need to feel holistically, not analytically.

But after watching "Sacrifice", I gained some confidence again. I felt that I was not completely lacking in talent other than rational analysis. I felt that I felt something that it wanted to show. Of course, what I feel may be superficial, and I can't convey my feelings well in words. But William James said: "There is no doubt that in religious circles, as in society, there are always people who have more comprehensive experience and undertake higher missions. But, at best, everyone stays with their own experience, whatever that is. And, others graciously allowed him to stay there. This article is my reluctance to express my own feelings and experiences.

Wittgenstein once said that a person must first have some kind of similar idea in order to truly understand him. I feel that certain things cannot be clearly stated. It is difficult to convey the feeling of the film, and the precious thing about the film is that it provides a new and extremely powerful channel for conveying these subtle and unspeakable feelings. But the film cannot impose a feeling on us. , it's more about evoking similar feelings and experiences we've had. What's the point of reading Wittgenstein and watching Tarkovsky if we already have? For me, all I already have is A seed, a sprout, or a dead tree, they cannot grow on my own, they need sunlight and water, and Wittgenstein and Tarkovsky are the golden sunlight through the clouds, the slow The river that flows slowly and nourishes countless creatures on both sides of the strait, relying on them, the seeds in my heart can germinate and grow.

Why can't I feel Rohmer when I see it? That's because I don't have the corresponding seed in my heart. I think everyone is different, some people have this kind of seed, some people have that kind of seed. And the same person is different at different times and in different atmospheres. Some seeds may not be in the season of germination, and no amount of irrigation will help. All you need is to wait patiently. I don't have seeds that can be nourished by Rohmer, it doesn't mean that I can't understand the beauty of Rohmer, I just can't really experience that beauty. It's as if William James' father was a devout Christian with a mystical religious experience. But William James could not experience it himself, but he still realized the value of religious experience to a certain extent through rational analysis. Rohmer gave me a very light feeling, Tarkovsky gave me a heavy feeling, and no matter how light or heavy, life cannot be made better without real experience. Hopefully one day, I too can actually experience the subtlety and magic of light.

There are many indescribable parts of my movie viewing experience, such as houses big and small, the female body in the mirror, the bicycle path, the curtains, the lights, the paintings behind the glass. . I may not have this feeling again when I watch it again, so at that time I hoped that it would be slower and slower, so that the feeling could last longer.

"Sculpting Time" said: "There was a monk who carried water up the mountain step by step, bucket by bucket, to water the dead trees; he silently believed that what he did was necessary, and he did not shake his belief for a moment. Believe that his belief in God has magical powers. He lived to witness the miracle: One morning, the tree suddenly came to life, its branches covered with young leaf buds.” This precious viewing experience is my The dead tree in my heart, the leaf buds that were watered by Tarkovsky. Such a small miracle deserves my serious record as a memorial.

I will try my best to describe without analysis, and try to give data and background without making conclusions. For all analyses and theories are either false or irrelevant, and the meaning of religion is unspeakable, only manifest.

There are a lot of lovely details in the movie, the tree is a Japanese tree, Maria is from Iceland, the tai chi pattern on her clothes, eating an apple before setting fire, etc.

The opening picture is Leonardo da Vinci's "The Pilgrimage of the Magi", which depicts this story from "Matthew's Gospel": "The star they saw in the east suddenly walked ahead of them, and went straight to the place of the children, and It stopped there. When they saw the star, they rejoiced greatly; and when they entered the house, and saw the little child and Mary his mother, they fell down and worshiped the little child, and opened the treasure chest, and gave gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Dedicated to him."

The background music in the opening credits is Bach's Matthew Passion. This passage in Matthew's Gospel is interesting: "Jesus called the tax collector Matthew as one of the Twelve Apostles. After Jesus called, Matthew held a banquet for Jesus at his home. The Pharisees criticized Jesus and the tax sinners like judges, and Jesus replied, "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners. "

Mary, the maid of Alexander's family, used the name of the Virgin, and the original name of the Virgin, מרים (Maryām), means "bitter" in Aramaic. The teaching is translated as Su Yan. The Virgin Mary is the first person in the world to ask Jesus Christ to perform miracles for the first time. She can pray for forgiveness of sins on behalf of others. She is the representative of human obedience and mercy. In Japan, when Catholicism was banned , there was a "Maria Guanyin" that worshipped the Guanyin statue as the Virgin. The maid Mary felt very much like "Maria Guanyin".

The film is dedicated to Tarkovsky's son, the little boy Is a central character. In Matthew's Gospel, Jesus is often referred to as a child, such as the one quoted above, and many others. The movie doesn't mention the child's name, only the little boy. I haven't seen the Swedish one. The Bible, I don't know if the same word is used.

The little boy finally said, "'It begins with words,' why is that? dad. "Starting with words, it is actually the correct translation of John's Gospel "In the beginning there was the Tao", the translation in the Chinese Union Version is "In the beginning there was the Tao, the Tao was with God, and the Tao was God", while the English King James version is: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”, the literal translation is “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. "

The Union Version is translated into Tao because there is a translation in the Bible that translates The Word into Logos. And the original Hebrew is indeed a word-oriented meaning. In Islam, Jesus is also known as the Word of God.

Beginning with words has another meaning, which is that in the Bible, words have creative power. The Gospel of John says, "In the beginning the word was with God. By him all things were made; and by him was not anything that was made that was made." In Genesis: "God said, Let there be light, let it be There is light". "God said: There must be air between the waters, and the water must be divided into upper and lower." "God said: There must be air between the waters, and the water must be divided into upper and lower." The following creations are also based on the words of God. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus also said: "Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God."

Man was created in the image of God, and our ability to create must also be based on words. This gives artistic expression some ultimate meaning, based on the creation of words, which solves the question of why we speak and why we express. Words and creations themselves have a certain meaning of being with God.

"Sacrifice" is a movie with deep Christian sensibilities, which can easily alienate people without a Christian background. In fact, religious experience is also derived from ordinary life experience, it is a part of life. Religion exists for our better life, not the other way around.

"Sacrifice" for me, and just for me, is actually very simple: "My son is my Jesus, and the woman I really love will save me in the end."

After the sacrifice of SIFF2016, it is the rebirth of hope. The last work of the old tower is very depressing. Even with the beautiful scenery of Faroe Island, it seems to be covered with a layer of fog by the old tower. Most of the film is surrounded by the fear and confusion of death, the fear of nuclear war, Deep disappointment with the Soviet Union, and a torch at the end, and the hometown is no longer connected.

The film was shot on the island of Faroe, where Bergman lives. Nykvist's photography is picturesque. There are many shocking moments, such as Alex leaning over the model of the villa like a god, or in the boy's room, the wind blows the curtains, and the light gradually brightens and dims. That last robe with tai chi printed on it is kind of funny.

The Sacrifice quotes

  • Alexander: I studied philosophy, history of religion, aesthetics. And ended up putting myself in chains. Of my own free will.
