The film won the Grand Jury Prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival, and Cannes, which has always favored the Darney brothers, once again affirmed them. But at the time, I was thinking about how a short 87-minute film would show something that would have the Cannes judges bow their heads? After I watched the film, I got the answer. What I want to say is: this is a movie that is surprising everywhere in the viewing process.
First of all, the opening is the plot of the protagonist Cyril calling in the nursery to find his father. Cyril persisted in dialing the number, and the voice of an empty number came out of the phone all the time. The person in charge next to him kept telling Cyril that your father had moved out. However, Cyril was still stubborn. Then, a series of scenes showed us that Cyril was still persistent and went to the apartment where his father once lived to find his father. This scene explains two extremely important plots: 1. Father, or the unparalleled importance of father's love to Cyril's heart, which will be developed to the extreme later. 2. Cyril is stubborn, indomitable, silent and withdrawn. 3. Explain the importance of bicycles left by his father to Cyril.
Next, Cyril met the heroine of the story, Samantha, who made the decision to take in Cyril for the weekend and helped Cyril retrieve the bicycle. Maybe Samantha helped him get his bike back. Because the bicycle was left to Cyril by his father, the bicycle is of great significance to Cyril. As a result, the withdrawn and stubborn Cyril and Samantha established a relatively friendly relationship. For Cyril, he has no relatives except his father (the father said that his grandmother had also passed away), so this is Samantha. Sha became Cyril's only "relative".
Then came the ending of the first paragraph of the film. With the help of Samantha, Cyril finally found his father who worked in the kitchen after untold hardships. For Cyril, his father was everything, and Cyril took the trouble to surround his father, the only thing he longed for was to be able to stay with his father for a while, and to ask him how long it would take him to bring him back from the orphanage. Seeing this, the audience is all moved by Cyril's love for his father. However, how can a poor father take good care of his son when he can't even take care of himself? Instead of letting his son follow him, he has no time to take care of it, and he can't realize his "big words" to start his own business. It is better to leave the child in a nursery school and take care of Samantha, a kind-hearted hairdresser. Under such circumstances, from the father's point of view, in fact, this choice can be understood as a more rational and realistic love for his son. Although, such love seems incomprehensible and hateful.
At this point, the father's image began to crumble in Cyril's world, but it was not yet time to collapse. On the way home, Cyril bumped his head against the car in desperation, and the music played, making our hearts quiver with the child. At such a young age, he had to experience growing up without a father's love.
This is the end of the first part, and the film walks away again. Begin to tell about the time Cyril and Samantha spent together after losing his father. Originally, Cyril and Samantha got along fairly well. Let's imagine that if Cyril lost his father's love, it would be great to have a kind woman like Samantha who dedicates the warmth of mother's love. Cyril's growth in such a situation will also be a good compensation. . However, the accident happened here.
Cyril came back from shopping and was about to go out to play football. Suddenly, finding that his bicycle had been stolen, Cyril ran like crazy. Finally, met the bad boy Weiss. The conspiracy and trap set by Weiss from behind. We can know that the stealing of the car to lure Cyril had been premeditated, and they had observed it for a long time. So, Weiss used all kinds of things to almost offer friendship. Cyril simply regarded Wes as his best friend. Weiss begins teaching Cyril how to commit a crime. During this period, there was a particularly touching sentence. Cyril simply said "just because of you" during the training process. It can be seen that Cyril treats Weiss as the most important friend in his life.
Then, a disturbing scene happened. Cyril cuts Samantha with a knife for a friend. After going out, he injured a father and son. After successfully stealing the money, he absconded in Wes's car. Seeing that Cyril was discovered, Whis revealed his fierceness, tried his best to leave his relationship with Cyril, and even threatened to kill him if he exposed himself.
Cyril wandered the long streets, overwhelmed, and went to find his father alone. He thought that since his father was short of money, he gave the stolen money to his father. Unexpectedly, his father rejected him indifferently and drove him away. Cyril was even more at a loss, and in an instant, his father's image completely collapsed.
Cyril returns to find Samantha, Samantha actually forgives him, and Cyril promises to be with Samantha forever. They then got in touch with the attacked father and son and signed the documents. At this time, Cyril and Samantha officially put aside everything and started a happy life. The film now shows the scene of Cyril and Samantha riding out on a bicycle. The sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, and the warm colors perfectly set off the warm and harmonious scene between the two.
Just when the audience thought that the film ended perfectly like this, the accident came again. Cyril went to buy the charcoal needed for the barbecue. Coincidentally met the father and son who was attacked by him. Although the father forgave Cyril for his mistakes, the son quit at this time. One rushed over and overturned Cyril, and attacked Cyril with stones, and Cyril fell from the tree. Just when the father and son thought that Cyril was dead, and they were discussing how to fabricate a lie, Cyril suddenly stood up, refused the father and son's request for treatment, picked up the charcoal and bicycle, and walked away. This is the end of the movie. . .
