Depp takes off his heavy makeup and begins to tell a story calmly

The film tells the story of Richard, an English professor with terminal lung cancer, when he knows he will die soon. The whole movie is different from Depp's previous style. He is used to gothic performances. Depp is trying to be a "normal person" this time. The overall narrative is calm and the style reminds me of Twenty Two. With his daughter coming out of the closet and his wife cheating, Depp seemed unusually calm, probably because he felt that he was going to die soon, just as he didn't want to suppress himself, nor quarrel or limit others. In the last days of his life, he chose to reconcile and follow his heart desires. As a tenured university professor with status and status, he started smoking marijuana, had indescribable things with gays, and had sex with a waiter. Constraining the dogma, as if it does not exist, freely squandering the last time of his life. Finally, say goodbye calmly to his wife, friends, colleagues, and even his wife's cheating partner. This kind of farewell would never happen to normal people, but when the last moment of life is left, people seem to have learned to "lighten their burden" and leave what they want most. At the end of the film, there are no miracles, like most diseases in the world. The night rain was pattering, and he came with his car and dog, and started to drive to the unknown valley. In the face of death, living in the present becomes a natural thing. For those of us who watch movies, what can we do to persevere? What is a matter of desire? What is the last thing in life that you won't regret? These seem to be more important, other who cares? The overall vision of the film is not as gorgeous and stunning as Depp's previous films, and the plot is not as compact and poignant as it used to be. It is even boring and sleepy to watch, but the theme is eye-catching. The overall movie has three stars, Depp has one more star, and the theme has one more star.

As a small-cost film about death education, it is worth watching for young people. The screenwriter and the soundtrack are very good, and several lines are very thought-provoking. The director's level is average. The acting skills given to three stars and one star to Uncle Pu have brought the struggles of a dying person to his bones. The final scene with his daughter was even more teary.

The Professor quotes

  • Richard: In each and every moment we're composing stories of our lives, let's aim to make it a meaningful read... or at least an interesting one

  • Olivia: Why are you and mom are still together?

Richard: I think as you get older, you, um, find yourself needing someone to hold accountable for life NOT turning out exactly as you'd imagine it. But listen to me, not every relationship has to be that. I mean, having said that, most are.
