It’s been a long time since I’ve seen such a heart throbbing work. Youth, alienation, brokenness and all the dazed ends. It seems that all the confusing and helpless feelings about youth are included in just 2 hours. , However, it is not bloated, and even always looks so lazy, in a trance, I think I am watching the blurred Jarmusch, and the skateboarding dreams seem to be real, and it seems to bring people into Berutocchi's dreamland.
It's hard to say what "Psychedelic Park" is talking about, just like the youth version of "Dream of Paris", it is a summary and recitation of all of my past. If "Dream of Paris" is a love letter to movies, then Van Sant's "Psychedelic Park" is undoubtedly a love letter to youth. Inheriting van Sant's consistent tone of blurred youth, it tells the unbearable story of a skateboarder manslaughtering a guard. "Psychedelic Park" is undoubtedly more stylized. Intentional words, Sant even invited a filmmaker to make a movie without a script. The famous stylized photographer of Wong Kar-wai, Tou Kefeng, has successfully introduced the youthful dynamism of skateboarding into Sant's always cold and restrained long-shot combination. As stated on his poster, "The film's visual beauty is so striking".
Sant, 57, has nearly 30 years of directing career, from "Midnight Cowboy" to "Private Iowa" to "Good Will Hunting" to "Elephant" which pushed it to its peak in 2003, like all Like a great director, Sant has only been making one movie all his life. His blurred youth is just different from Iwai's youth, which is more dark and heavy, but also exudes a unique beauty because of his unique lens. "Psychedelic Park" is the pinnacle of Sant's stylization. It got rid of the greenness of "Soul Catcher" and also removed the sensitive subject matter of "Elephant". "Park" is completely a work that is vivid and free. Like "Dream of Paris" for Berlutocchi, "Days on the Clouds" for Antonioni, "Eyes-Opening" for Kubrick (perhaps it is inappropriate to say that, because the old library can be said to be do whatever you want), the pinnacle of Sant's entry into the ranks of the masters.
What is puzzling is that this year, Sant brought you a completely non-Santized "Milk". It is equally wonderful but it is difficult to find the shadow of Sant's youth. Probably like Fincher's "Barton", it has reached a The change you want after the peak.
I have to mention the music used by van sant in "Psychedelic Park", from Elliot Smith's refreshing ballads to Ethan Rose's psychedelic electronic music, and even Beethoven's ninth. The tone of the film complements each other perfectly, giving the brokenness and restlessness of youth almost perfectly. In particular, I want to mention the beautiful and longing soundtrack that appeared in the film three times. It was originally composed by Nino Rota, the godfather of Italian music. This piece of music is so beautiful and moving in the whole film with the theme of blurring and fragmentation, just like " The slow motion of the protagonist playing with the dog in The Elephant makes people want to stay in this moment and revel in the beauty of letting go of everything. This is probably the charm of all Sant movies. All beauty does not last .
To leave is freedom, to stay is to die.
