Look back at me...

The Hale family moved from London to the industrial town of Milton for work reasons. The eldest daughter, Magaret Hale, met John Thorton, a local textile factory owner. Self-made John was attracted to Magaret, and after her confession was rejected, he still took care of her in secret. The distance between the two turned when Thorton went bankrupt. Magaret, who received a large inheritance, rushed back to Milton from London after learning about Thorton's situation and invested in Thorton's factory. The relationship between the two finally came to fruition.

The emotional development of the male and female protagonists is similar to "Pride and Prejudice", both of which are Industrial/social novels, but "South & North" has more descriptions in the social reality part, such as the rise of the middle class, women's rights, labor conflicts, British textiles Industrial development, changes in religious thought, etc. Of course, "Pride & Pride" and "South & North" have different main lines. The former focuses on dance parties and conversations in the boudoir, while the latter puts the environment on the social network of the entire town.

I didn't read the original, just watched the BBC adaptation. The adaptation of BBC's famous novels is notoriously delicate, and this drama is no exception. The overall plot feels richer than "Pride & Pride". There are not many rural scenery in the play, but the gloom and gloom of the industrial city, which makes the love line particularly bright and moving. The female protagonist is attractive, and at first glance it looks normal. The temperament and thoughts of everyone's ladies begin to show gradually in the second episode, especially the male protagonist's appearance (he is actually the Hobbit's prince of complexion) Ah ah ah), the front is a typical British gentleman's face, and the side can be handsome and dizzy!

After watching the play, I don't understand why such a rich "South & North" is unknown. Instead, "Pride & Pride" has become the representative of Victorian novels. After a simple search, it should be the influence of text style and writing style. After reading the tome of the original book, let's continue to watch the BBC miniseries~

North & South quotes

  • Hannah Thornton: A mother's love holds fast and forever. A girl's love is like a puff of smoke - it changes with every wind.

  • Margaret Hale: I wish I could tell you how lonely I am. How cold and harsh it is here. Everywhere there is conflict and unkindness. I think God has forsaken this place. I believe I have seen hell and it's white, it's snow-white.
