The BBC is the BBC, unequivocally. The most British movie I've ever seen. Thornton's stern and resolute silhouette in the flying fox in the sky, and Margaret's thoughtful eyes in the speeding car window, are still fixed in my mind. South and North, Ladies and Gentlemen, Tradition and Change, Employers and Workers, Speculation and Industry, Collective Strikes and Individual Poverty. . . There are oppositions everywhere, but they always move forward with the wheel of history. Big times, small emotions, everything blends so perfectly.
By the way: Mr. Thornton is too handsome, the eyes of an English gentleman are really unbearable. Could be with Ralph of The English Patient. Fiennes comparable

North & South quotes

  • Hannah Thornton: A mother's love holds fast and forever. A girl's love is like a puff of smoke - it changes with every wind.

  • Margaret Hale: I wish I could tell you how lonely I am. How cold and harsh it is here. Everywhere there is conflict and unkindness. I think God has forsaken this place. I believe I have seen hell and it's white, it's snow-white.
