Film Review, The Glass Castle

Two weeks, watching four "true story" adaptations, tired!

The Jungle by Daniel Radcliffe

"Miracle on the Snowy Mountains" by Josh Hartnett

The Last Madness by Robert Patrick

The Glass Castle by Woody Harrelson (today's protagonist)

The same type of works appear, boring!

American movie "The Glass Castle"

Type of work: Drama

Main cast: Brie Larson (as Jeannette), Woody Harrelson (as Rex), Naomi Watts (as Rose)

Story Overview: Jeannette's Memoirs Growing Up

Release Date: August 11, 2017 in the United States

Typical mediocrity! In the whole work, except for the normal performance of the actors, the performance of other key elements (narrative structure, rhythm grasp, theme sublimation) is not ideal.

Just a quick taste and a quick review.

Highlights

Acting actor Woody Harrelson!

①Responsible for appearance

Don't get me wrong, it's not that Harrelson is beautiful and handsome! It means that his image in the film is infinitely close to the prototype Rex, with a wide forehead and a big chin.

②Excellent performance

What kind of person is Rex? Miserable childhood, excessive alcoholism, smart paranoia, utopianism, utopian feelings.

Does Rex love his children? Love! But don't know how to put it into action. He thought that everything he did (wandering around the world = freedom?) was an expression of "love", completely disregarding the thoughts of the children and his wife, and insisting on doing things his own way, and as a result, he went further and further, until finally, the children left one after another.

Actor Harrelson performed such a complex, empty-minded and weird "old child" so well and so accurately grasping his emotions, which is quite impressive! In particular, the last scene against Brie Larson was a textbook performance.

slot

I, narrative lengthy

127 minutes of boring, sleepy!

The director tried to tell this bizarre "family" story in a relaxed state of mind, but the result was self-defeating and the film became nondescript. There are neither enough attractions nor corresponding opposites. The whole film relies on "talking" to enrich the boring and long plot line, which is very embarrassing.

II, rhythm disorder

The first half is "slowly", and the second half is "fast progress"!

The disorganized narrative rhythm makes the already lackluster content of the film even more boring and blunt. Although in terms of narrative, the director uses "reality" and "memory" (sequential narrative + interlude) to advance the plot in a staggered and parallel way, to some extent, activates the rigid narrative line. But the too willful selection of "interlude time points" (the editing is too random) directly dismembers the entire story chain. Especially the reversal at the end of the film, the deliberately "sentimental" drama is too false.

III, subject unknown

Glass castle, dream or delusion?

This work is called "Glass Castle", this flashy castle is not only the pursuit of Rex's life, but also the source of all illusions!

Rex used lies to deceive his children again and again, so that these ignorant and ignorant children were immersed in false fantasies for a long time. Finally, one day, the illusion was shattered, and the cruel reality impacted everyone's heart, so the four children left, the family relationship dissipated, the dream died, and the "glass castle" in the heart fell.

Destin Cretton (director) has a lot of opportunities to extract the essence of the original work ( alternative education concept, free interpretation, meaning of growth ) bit by bit, integrate it into the video, and pass it to the audience in front of the screen. Too bad it was missed. Instead, the narrative is flat as water, and the content is repeated (confrontation, compromise, escape...). Totally uninteresting.

Write at the end. The original work "Glass Castle" is a highly infectious inspirational and warm work, but it lost its original brilliance after the adaptation, which is disappointing. I suggest that if you have spare time, you might as well download the original work and read it, and you will definitely have more feelings and more gains.

Director ☆☆☆☆ (very rough adaptation, did not capture the essence of the original work at all)

Actors ★★★★☆ (except for David, who played by Max Greenfield, who is slightly distracted, the others are online)

Plot ★★★☆☆ (very mediocre narrative, the choice of the entry point of the interlude is very casual)

Visual effects★★★★☆

Sound effects ★★★☆☆ (very general, lack of presence)

Recommendation ★★★☆☆ (Darkness "Chicken Soup for the Soul", don't try it if you lack a certain resistance)

The Glass Castle quotes

  • Jeannette: [sighs] My parents are squatting in an abandoned building on the Lower East Side.

    David: Jeanette...

Jeannette: They were homeless before that for three years before that, which was pretty much how they raised us. My dad is not developing a technology for bituminous coal but he could tell you anything you want to know about it. He is the smartest man I know. He is also a drunk.

    [inhales]

Jeannette: never finishes what he starts and can be extremely cruel. But he dreams bigger than anyone I've ever met. And he never tries to be somebody that he's not. He never wanted me to either.

    [Exhales]

Jeannette: I'm sorry, but I have to leave.

    David: Go.

  • Jeannette: You did all this for me?

Rex: Since when is it wrong for a father to take care of his little girl?
