Why does war exist, and whether war has value. This is a question repeatedly raised by the veterans in the play, and it is also a question that puzzles me.
soldiers before the war
Soldiers often have a sense of mission to defend their homeland and the country, and on the battlefield they even have a great spirit of sacrifice for others.
Of course they were not born soldiers, most of them lived the same age as ordinary children before leaving their hometown, with parents and siblings.
Military life has changed the strict life of their troops, and the repetition of mechanical troops has made them "learn" to obey orders, and defending their homeland is their belief and mission. This is a place where a person can be changed.
I have also thought about becoming a soldier. Their regular and quick action style is what I yearn for. Those who have experienced military life have kept that belief deep in their hearts.
soldiers on the battlefield
become like an animal to kill
Most German soldiers don't care who wins, most are thinking, I've had enough
The war is over, this is the dullest moment of our lives
I still can't understand why wars exist, I think history will eventually prove that these are worthless
I don't think we are heroes
The cruelty of war made them think about the meaning of war, and their own meaning.
post-war soldier
The war is over, this is the dullest moment of our lives
We seem redundant, our emotions dry up
Our world is cut off from civilians, people can't understand
The fighting beliefs that had always encouraged them to move forward disappeared, and they didn’t know why.
Those who have experienced the battlefield are completely different from the world that the commoners have seen, and the world view and values are divided.
There's a lot more to discover in the documentary.
