The stereotyped Asian American scholar and her love story

An LGBT youth film with a very comfortable overall rhythm. The screenwriter is very smart, and there is no shortage of places in this routine. The three protagonists are: the campus goddess, the Asian scholar, and the football player. But the routine also moved a little bit of thought: the Asian scholar is a hidden girl, the campus goddess is not a wooden beauty with an empty head, and the football player was just a stunned young man sitting on the bench at the beginning.

What should a graduation party without a horse be like and a youth film in which men and women are forced to fall in love? It's probably really half-understood. Even the overused stalk "helping a good friend to chase a man/goddess and accidentally fell in love with a good friend" is not boring because the screenwriter has carefully added a lot of "small condiments".

What exactly is love? The proposition is so big that no one knows what the correct answer is, even if everyone has tried to answer it. The screenwriter also tried to answer this question to the audience through the scene of the three protagonists in the church. Love is forbearance and restraint? Or destruction and wanton? TAs have different opinions on this, which is understandable.

In addition, the image of the "Asian scholar" created by the director caused me slight discomfort. On the one hand, I am very resistant to labeling Asians as academic, not gregarious, and not fond of dressing up. On the other hand, I have to admit that I found the shadow of myself and my peers in the heroine - she can be any female classmate in your class, and you even have to admit that she is likely to have The same autumn coat! This is so bad: do you reject stereotypes? That's right, it was rejected because it was too similar! When other girls have long wavy hair and sparkle on campus in cute skirts, Asian girls are like this: the bun is uninspired at the bottom, the long hair is tied behind the back and covered with large round glasses Live most of the face, and then match it with a down jacket with dark blue + hot-eye fluorescent orange hat. Help! I'm ugly and I can laugh at myself, but that doesn't mean you can call me ugly! This damn self-esteem is so inexplicable... The most terrifying scene takes place in the climax of the whole film. After the showdown in the church, the woman and the woman and the two meet on the road, and the two express their hearts to each other. The girl thought about separation, so she threw off the bicycle and gave the girl a kiss. The second girl was wearing a denim jacket with a red short skirt. Not to mention how beautiful she was, at least she could tell she was a fashionable girl! What about the female one? The aqua blue tight-fitting long-sleeved, round hem of the clothes floats out of the jeans very spiritlessly, really good!

I can understand that the image of the female lead is necessary for the plot, and she is also portrayed as a positive character, and she is not smeared. However, I'm substituting myself as an Asian: if I'm treated this way in a white society, I'm probably not very happy.

Three and a half! There are pros and cons to this movie. The good part is that everyone can see the point that resonates with them: the embarrassment of the first-generation immigrants' expertise at home and the embarrassment of being useless abroad; the unwritten "campus culture" in which ordinary Chinese help white people to write papers and make money ; The helplessness of talented high school students trapped in a small closed place and being excluded; the confusion of LGBT high school students whose sexual orientation is not clear; the astonishment of the kind red neck who was hit by Ji grandma to religious beliefs. The ending is realistic, open and warm, but unfortunately the middle process is a bit lengthy, and the very dramatic story is relatively bland. As Mrs. Ji, I was actually moved by the revolutionary friendship (?) between the male and female protagonists.

My favorite part is: in most movies, love is described as an electric current, passing through different environments, characters and predicaments, and finally making two souls feel the encounter, which is an exaggerated coincidence; and this movie Love is depicted as a river in which different souls will immerse, wade through, and go where they want to go.

The Half of It quotes

  • Ellie Chu: I'm Ellie Chu.

Aster Flores: Yes, I know. You've only been playing my dad's services every Sunday for, like, four years. You're his favorite heathen. He can't handle mediocre accompanists, even if they ARE saved.

  • Ellie Chu: The good thing about being different is that no one expects you to be like them.
