Before opening it, I thought it would be a sensational movie like a sea paradise, which has a protagonist who plays autism into cerebral palsy. Unexpectedly, the director's understanding of Asperger's is in place, there is no self-righteous speculation, and there is no tragic rendering. Every eye movement of the male protagonist is a typical Asperger's performance. He usually doesn't look at people. He talks about topics that interest him. He doesn't understand the meaning of other people's words. And self-harm. Anyone who knows about Asperger's syndrome, autism, or the autism spectrum (ASD) knows that these traits are lifelong and cannot be "cured."
However, such a person actually got love. There is a girl who doesn't care about his inconsiderateness and inconsiderateness, but sees his simplicity. Yes, this touching simplicity, what we miss in mourning, is nothing but their innate quality. Children with ASD don't know how to beat around the bush, and they take it for granted that people in the world don't go around in circles. This is a beautiful thing, but it has become a stumbling block for their survival.
Humans are social animals, relying on flocking to obtain resources to survive. It's even written into our genes. Babies are born with a series of milestones in the development of social behavior, the key ability to socialize. Most babies reach it naturally without any great education, and then they grow up and continue. Survive by becoming part of the social machine through various social interactions. People on the autism spectrum, on the other hand, stagnate after milestones and slowly grow into what people call "nerds."
NT, Neurotypical, is a particularly friendly word that treats us social beings as typical, that is, ASD is only classified as not typical, not psycho, giving people on the autism spectrum a "neurodiversity" Soil. At least some people are beginning to understand that they are not mentally ill, they are just different parts of their brains that we are good at. The excellent mechanical memory and computing ability of some ASD patients is amazing. Like Adam, they are familiar with all kinds of data. Sometimes I even wonder if they are like people in the future, who can live well by data rather than social interaction.
Unfortunately, this is the present, not the future. In order to become NT, or infinitely close to NT, ASD patients and their families need to put in countless efforts. Just like Beth, he is "trained" to imitate NT's behavior and language to assist in various social situations. Looking at his progress, many people said excitedly at the end of the film that he was fine and could go back to find her. However, this is just the good wish of the audience. Even if Adam knows how to deal with various social situations, he still can't understand the world of NT, and still can't read the meaning of others. Maybe he can't fully achieve what Beth wants to be loved. A cruel reality is that perhaps most ASD patients and families have worked hard all their lives and finally found that they just moved from outside the wall to the gate of the courtyard.
Yes, being an NT is not that easy.
At the same time, being an NT is not so necessary.
Adams just need your appreciation, understanding, and a smile on them.
Remember the word neurotypical reminds us, embrace your atypicality.
