"Strange Shapes" and "Alien Shapes"

I was bored at home during the epidemic, and revisit this 82-year classic.

Seeing that many people above said that this is a complete alien, I would like to express my views and comparisons of the two films. It should be noted that there are only two "Strange Forms", and "Aliens" is actually a very long series of stories, including four main stories, two Aliens vs. Iron and Blood, "Prometheus" and "Aliens: Contract" , In current terms, it is a huge "alien universe" with aliens, predators, and giants. It is obviously improper to compare with the entire series, so here is only the first part of their respective well-received comparisons.

I think the story frames of the two films are similar: the closed environment (the missing spaceship and the scientific research station), the accidentally discovered ruins (the spaceship wreck on the star ball and the destroyed Norwegian scientific research station), Monsters with open minds (alien and strange), anti-kill after being killed to only one person (Ripley and the male protagonist who cannot remember the name). But besides that, I think the two stories are fundamentally different. "Alien" takes the complete life cycle of aliens from alien eggs → face worms → chest breakers → adult aliens as clues, focusing on showing a real alien creature to humans. In other words, the alien is the real protagonist, and several humans mainly play a role in foiling (except for Ripley of course). The creative team added a lot of biological details (such as unusually shaped strong acid blood, heavy-tasting teeth in the mouth), giving people a strong sense of "science" and "sense of production." In contrast, the strange shape does not have such meticulous "academic" support, only a segment of computer simulation of phagocytosis and assimilation of cells, the whole story is obviously not as delicate and "large sense" as the abnormal shape. Based on this, I firmly oppose those who say that the story of the strange shape completely explodes the strange shape, but I also think that the latter cannot completely explode the former. The advantage of "Strange Form" lies in its werewolf-killing death mode. Ripley can also fight with the crew (but the strength is too different and everyone is alienated for seconds), and everyone in the Antarctic research station is isolated. When you become an individual, you don't know if the person in front of you is the same kind of creature as you. The fear comes from your side. To sum up, the two stories have their own advantages. Alien shapes rely on perfect creatures created by extraordinary imagination, and strange shapes rely on the classic and easy-to-use "heavy snow covers the mountains, no one is surviving". There is no "complete explosion". Say.

Carpenter's movies during his creative period are always so fascinating, and the shell of a well-made science fiction thriller packs his strong B-level feelings. The foreplay of this movie is very long, but the slow plot amplifies the psychological fear conveyed by the enclosed space and strengthens the dramatic tension between the characters. The horror and bloody scenes were absolutely unprecedented in history. This is a movie. A classic that has been imitated by countless future generations.

Now, no matter how good the computer-made special effects are, no matter how realistic they are, I still think they are fake, and this kind of special effects made decades ago with makeup and props has a very strong sense of reality. A few close-up shots really can’t bear to look directly at them, and they are a little nauseous.

The Thing quotes

  • Fuchs: [whispering] I have to talk to you.

MacReady: I'm tired of talkin', Fuchs. I just wanna get up to my shack and get drunk.

    Fuchs: Mac, it's important.

    MacReady: What is it?

    Fuchs: Outside.

MacReady: It's 40 below zero outside.

  • MacReady: I don't know. Thousands of years ago it crashes, and this thing... gets thrown out, or crawls out, and it ends up freezing in the ice.

Childs: I just cannot believe any of this voodoo bullshit.

Palmer: Childs, happens all the time, man. They're falling out of the skies like flies. Government knows all about it, right, Mac?

Childs: You believe any of this voodoo bullshit, Blair?

Palmer: Childs, Childs... Chariots of the Gods, man. They practically own South America. I mean, they taught the Incas everything they know.

Garry: So, come on now, MacReady, Norwegians get ahold of this... and they dig it up out of the ice.

MacReady: Yes, Garry, they dig it up, they cart it back, it gets thawed out, it wakes up... probably not the best of moods... I don't know, I wasn't there!

Nauls: [skates in with ripped long johns] Which one of you disrespectful men been tossing his dirty drawers in the kitchen trash can, huh? From now, I want my kitchen clean, all right? Germ free!

Childs: So how's this motherfucker wake up after thousands of years in the ice?

George Bennings: And how can it look like a dog?

MacReady: I don't know how. 'Cause it's different than us, see? 'Cause it's from outer space. What do you want from me? Ask him!

    [motions to Blair]

Childs: You buy any of this Blair?
