Learning English well can surprise the husband and children for a while, but it is impossible to change the whole life.
The female protagonist did realize the sublimation of her self-perception, but in the end she returned to the patriarchal society of India and continued to be a housewife, serving tea, food, laundry and mopping the floor. She was out of touch with the society and was still an accessory in the eyes of her husband who could speak English.
Real respect for women cannot rely solely on the awakening of women's self, but requires the progress of the whole society and takes time.
Although the daughter in the film grew up in a good environment and has a good school education, she has witnessed her father's bossiness towards her mother since she was a child, and she is also quite disrespectful to her mother. Of course, perhaps her mother's change in the United States will become a landmark educational event in her growing up. I also hope that the power of the heroine role model can be brought back to India and spread among relatives and friends.
