Ice hockey gladiator

There are quite a few sports movies I watched, but most of them are biased towards personal sports events, because in this type of subject the protagonist’s emotions and growth will be magnified, and everything about the protagonist will be very clear and graspable. The screenwriter’s skills in creative techniques will also be relatively easy to create in terms of themes and characters. On the other hand, there are relatively few emotions that team sports can rely on. Several items such as "team spirit", "cooperation" and "compassion between characters" are necessary. On this basis, the story space will be narrower and new ideas can be written. There are also fewer places. The "Bad Hockey Boy" is a story created by capturing a new idea. This also inspired me that a team sport needs to go deeper into the sport itself, rather than build a story from the character and social level.
The story of "Bad Hockey" is very simple. The core is to build a story around how the bar security guard Glatt grew into a hockey player. A marginal figure who is not valued by his family or society, but is very good at fighting. He accidentally comes into contact with ice hockey, finds what he wants to do, and gains love. The standard happy end. From the main line, it is more like a personal movie, but what is more interesting is that it sets up two counterparts of Xavier and Rose to reflect his characters. One is a star shooter who has passed away, and the other is an ace fighter who is about to retire. One teammate, one enemy. One must be protected, and one must be defeated. Under the mutual stimulation of the two, Glatt finally completed his transformation and became an indispensable member of the team, leading the team to win the game.
However, what really caught my eyes in this film was actually the "duel time" on the ice hockey rink. I knew for the first time that there was such a reasonable conflict setting in sports, and it could also be combined with ice hockey techniques and tactics. Looking up, this alone surprises me, because it may be a new starting point for creation.
In any case, for the first time I watched a movie about ice hockey, I felt lucky to watch this movie with a unique perspective. Next, I will look for more movies about ice hockey to watch.
(Finally, I saw the easter eggs and found out that this is a movie based on real people's deeds. It is no wonder that the sense of personal growth is so strong, but I still recommend it to everyone. It is still very useful for understanding ice hockey~)

Goon quotes

  • Doug Glatt: Man, I'm wasted. Eva, I really like your name.

Eva: Yes, sir. It's a great name. Like the Bible just with a bit more, kind of, mustard on it.

Doug Glatt: I think it's a pretty name. Like your face. You got a pretty name and a pretty face.

Eva: Aw, you're very nice to me.

    [takes drink]

Eva: Fuck it. Doug, I dig hockey players. The shit, the violence, the beer, all of it. I fucking love it.

    Doug Glatt: Sad.

Eva: Wanna get out of here?

    Doug Glatt: Yes, please.

  • Doug Glatt: You're so pretty. You're so beautiful. I'm sorry, I keep saying that. I'm sorry.

Eva: It's fine. I think it's cute. Who doesn't like being told they're beautiful?

    [points at apartment]

    Eva: This is me.

Doug Glatt: I like you, though.

    Eva: You do, eh?

    Doug Glatt: Yes, ma'am.

Eva: Eva likes Doug. Eva likes you.

Doug Glatt: What does Eva think about kissing?

    Eva: Which type?

    Doug Glatt: French?

    [kisses Eva]

    Eva: Oh fuck.

Doug Glatt: Um. Hey, uh, what do you think about me calling you sometime?

Eva: I don't know whether that's the best idea. This shit.

Doug Glatt: Why don't you give me your number and I promise that I'll never call you.

    Eva: Okay.
