A comedy for all, a tragedy for one

The Jews in my impression have always been weak, Jews in exile, Jews persecuted by the Nazis. So, at the beginning of watching the film, I was full of sympathy for Sherlock.

I think the reason why this is called a comedy should be a Christian comedy. Seeing that their dissidents were deprived of everything, they felt so happy! Those sanctimonious, squandered with Jewish money, and in turn looked down on Jews. Sherlock's name is never called, just Jewish, Jewish. In the end, the Virgin seems to have forgiven Sherlock, but asked him to convert. How important and precious is faith to a devout believer.

Sherlock stood alone among those Christians, so weak and helpless was really poignant!

The Merchant of Venice quotes

  • Salerio: Why, I am sure, if he forfeit thou wilt not take his flesh: what's that good for?

Shylock: To bait fish withal: if it will feed nothing else, it will feed my revenge.

  • Shylock: He hath disgraced me, and hindered me half a million, laughed at my losses, mocked at my gains, scorned my nation, thwarted my bargains, cooled my friends, heated mine enemies; and what's his reason? I am a Jew.
