I've always felt that Ellen's awakening started when they first smoked in a pub. With a handsome profile shrouded in white smoke, Bi Yingying's pupils were overflowing with a mocking smile. As Lu said, what Allen was looking for in him might just be a difference at first.
Although Lu doesn't seem to have any writing talent, he has an eye for digging and a keen sense of beauty that is unmatched by others. He is mysterious, and he is detached from everyone, but he is infinitely charming and turns all living beings upside down. He became the inspiration for a group of brilliant writers, a central figure in this peculiar circle.
Vanity and arrogance are his bywords. Lu needs everyone's praise, and it is difficult to accept excessive closeness and entanglement. It seems that it can only be seen from a distance and cannot be harassed, and you are avoided as soon as you walk in; and when you want to retreat, the Muse kisses with pity, which makes you want to stop, almost crazy.
Allen is the best proof. Unlike David's endless pursuit, his love seems to be a guardian-like existence as Lu said. From the sudden heartbeat of being led into the new world, to the jealousy and confusion of Lu’s suitors, to the affectionate confession on the ship and the avoidance after kissing under the tree, his dissatisfaction revealed carefully, lest Lu was tired and distressed.
Lu seems to be really unkind to the extreme. In the face of Allen's affection, he chose to leave without saying goodbye, and he did not hesitate to dislike David's pursuit. What impressed me the most was at the end, David's desperate expression when Lu stabbed David with a knife, and the mournful expression on Lu's face when he sank him into the water.
After Lu was thrown into prison, the coterie officially fell apart. Whether it is the confusing world seen with the aid of drugs, or the pranks that lurked together in the library to display banned books, or those unspoken love and desires, they are all sealed in Allen's novel "The Night of Doubt".
In reality, after Lu was released from prison, faced with the letter to Lu on the title page of Allen's poetry collection, he requested that it be reprinted and deleted. This move seems to have officially put an end to himself and the past. Lu died in 2005, married twice and had three children.
"Life is like a fool's dream, full of noise and commotion, but without any meaning."
