But McFarland had kids who were great runners.
The coach was expelled from the original school because he was too draggy and came to McFarland's high school. As a multi-tasking physical education teacher, he discovered the running talent of some children when he was bored. So he gathered seven children and started teaching them cross-country racing.
And he, began to learn how to become a cross-country running coach.
This is an inspirational movie. A bunch of wild kids turned cross-country runners, won interstate championships at the end, and set out to compete aggressively at the national, or even world, level. And the coach has become famous. Everyone's dream has come true. The children in the slums were admitted to college because of their running skills, which changed the fate of themselves and their descendants - they no longer have to bend over to pick vegetables for a long time in order to support their families under the scorching sun.
The most touching part of the film is that after the 7 players won the first game, they did not jump and cheer, but immediately knelt down, placed each other on each other's shoulders, and bowed their heads in prayer. If it was sentimental enough, tears would have welled up in my eyes long ago. Although they were poor, at that moment, they showed their richest side with the most noble and pure faith.
Help is always mutual. If you give me a smile, I will feel a touch of warmth. The coach may have never thought that these children who love to run will change their life plans; and these children may even dare not imagine that such a dragging white coach will rewrite their own life and even the life trajectory of their children and grandchildren.
So, never give up hope. Good things are always there, if you keep your eyes open to discover.
